Past Gas #245: Hot Rods Were The Original Tuner Cars

Past Gas #245: Hot Rods Were The Original Tuner Cars

This week on Past Gas…it’s the history of Hot Rodding!
Hot rod culture might seem tame today, and is probably more associated with baby boomer car shows than rebellious street racers. But the engine building and custom aesthetic work hot rodders did during their heyday not only kickstarted the aftermarket performance and car enthusiast media industries- it also set a blueprint for the countless enthusiasts that have followed.
How did it go from essentially nothing to a major influence in car culture? How did it create some of the most ubiquitous racing series? And how does it continue to influence car culture today?

Past Gas #242: How These Feuding Brothers Traded 500 mph Records

Past Gas #242: How These Feuding Brothers Traded 500 mph Records

Brothers Walt and Art Arfons would set and break the Land Speed record three separate times from 1960-1965. They would achieve these records while refusing to set foot on the Salt Flats at the same time nor speaking to one another for years. By 1960, the brothers’ relationship had deteriorated so completely that they would work on their cars in separate garages on the same piece of property they inherited from their father. Today on Past Gas; How did two brothers, born into poverty, revolutionize jet-powered racing? Where did they get the engines? And why weren’t they speaking?

Sad excuse of podcast

3-5 minutes intro of some men greets each other as if they've just met. Usually followed by some (bad) joke and laughter from said (bad) joke.

Before the actual material starts, an ad-break (already? Gees. Fine, at least I'm hoping for a good automotive material)

Actual podcast starts, but what these men are actually doing is just reading a book or articles. No effort in rephrasing (if I want to listen to someone reading a book, I'd rather have an audiobook). A few sentences in, the host stops for a decent discussion. Although, instead, it's usually followed by some (bad) joke and laughter from said (bad) joke.

AD BREAK

I know these hosts from watching donut media before they even have 100k subscribers. Glad to see they've grown to milions of subs. But sadly, it appears that their knowledge about automotive world didn't grow one bit. There are plenty other podcasts that offer better automotive content than this. But if you like some (bad) joke and laughter from said (bad) joke, this is one for you.

AD BREAK

I would give the actual automotive discussions a 7/10. But since these discussions are rare, I can't give this podcast more than 1 star.

TLDR:

50% (bad) joke and laughter from said (bad) joke
20% Reading comprehension
20% Discussions
10% AD BREAK
