While vote-by-mail has its issues, it’s worked before. And contrary to the narrative pushed by the president, red, blue and purple states all can (and have) won elections primarily determined by mailed ballots. For evidence, you need only look West. A recent study performed by political scientists at Brigham Young University and the University of Virginia examined six western states and found that vote-by-mail increases voter turnout without favoring either political party. The researchers studied three decades of mail-in elections in California, Colorado, Nebraska, Oregon, Utah and Washington, a mix of traditional red and blue states, and discovered that voting by mail shows no uptick in support for Democratic candidates (or for Republicans, either).
