A milestone is a marker next to the side of the road to mark the distance in miles to a particular place.  

There are milestones in death too, but I'm still not sure where they are leading to. I hit two milestones in the last week that surprised me. They weren't really obvious until they were! These two milestones left me wondering where is the particular place I'm trying to get to?
