The Strong Stance Reflects on FTMFitCon2015

The Strong Stance Reflects on FTMFitCon2015

I recently presented at the FTM Fitness Conference in Atlanta. It was three days of speakers, breakout sessions and events focused on the acknowledgement, discussion, education and celebration of transgender fitness in all forms: physical, emotional, mental and financial. This was the second year for the FTMFitcon, which will soon be going thru a rebranding of sorts…but we’ll get to that later. For most people that have heard of FTMFitCon, they know it as the ‘First FTM Bodybuilding Competition’, but that event is just one aspect of the conference. In addition to the historic bodybuilding competition, there was a fashion show, morning bootcamps, a wellness fair, more than 20 workshops and discussions and a closing ceremony and reception.  Among the keynote speakers were Buck Angel, Ryan Sallans, Dr. Kortney Ziegler, and Tracee McDaniel (who has appeared on The Strong Stance a number of previous times).

I attended the conference in a number of different capacities. Primarily, I was there as a session presenter, but I was also there as an attendee and as press. In tonight’s episode of The Strong Stance, we’re gonna do something a little different. I’ll talk a bit about my session presentation and my experiences as an attendee, but more importantly, I’ll talk to a number of attendees as well as FTM Fitness World founder and president, Neo Sandja. You won’t want to miss this, so stay tuned.

Table Talk Radio with Comedian Reggie Jackson

When people hear the name Reggie Jackson they usually think about a black man that hits home runs, not a white woman that tells jokes. Originally from Virginia, Reggie moved to Atlanta in 2005, and very quickly found her knack for making people laugh. Aside from performing stand-up, Jackson is also a member of the interactive sketch comedy group, Call Me Up.

The path to comedy that David Young took may be an unusual one, if there is such thing as a usual path to comedy. Originally out of Virginia, David moved to Atlanta in 2011 to pursue his passions in film and sound engineering: behind the scenes of showbusiness. When he took a job running sound at a comedy club, he began to develop his ear for the timing and subject matter that led him to perform on stage. Drawing upon his experiences in international travel and the entertainment industry's hidden quirks, David flashes his unique perspective through the lens of his laid-back, cartoon-like voice.

Tune in each Tuesday night as Reggie and Dave take on the tables of some of the hottest restaurants in Atlanta.

    In this episode, #Oceanaire, #TheDaiquiriFactory, #EAVThaiandSushi, #AtlantaComedyClub, #BetweenWomen, #HighlandPub, #AcrossTheStreetBar

The Strong Stance: The Injustice of Incarceration

The Strong Stance: The Injustice of Incarceration

From CeCe McDonald’s imprisonment for defending herself in an assault, to Laverne Cox’s portrayal as Sophia Burset in Orange Is the New Black, to Jennicet Gutierrez’s White House protest of transgender detainee treatment in ICE custody. Today we have two guests joining us to discuss the current state of the American prison system, the concept of abolition and the reforms necessary to protect transgender and gender non-conforming prisoners.

Prison Stats: The United States has 5% of the world's population, but 25% of the world's prisoners. (2014 stat) In 2010, the U.S. spent $80 billion on incarceration. (2014 stat) In 2012, one in every 108 adults was in prison or jail and one in 28 American children has a parent behind bars. (2014 stat).

LGBT youth make up only 6 percent of the general population but represent 15 percent of people currently in juvenile detention. (http://www.advocate.com/commentary/2015/9/18/helping-queer-youth-affected-school-prison-pipeline) 40% of Transgender Prisoners Are Sexually Abused, which is 10 times the rate of prisoners in general. (https://transgenderequality.wordpress.com/2014/12/18/federal-survey-40-of-transgender-prisoners-are-sexually-abused-each-year/)
