Pradine Saint-Fort, is an immigration attorney in NYC. She was born in the US to Haitian immigrants and growing up in Brooklyn, she knew from a young age, she wanted to help people. This has led her to a career in policy and law. Pradine's career has included policy research and implementation at the Vera Institute, a national research and policy organization, and the NYC police department; in addition to the practice of immigration law. She joins us to share how she made the decision to become a lawyer and her career journey. 

Dr. Nina Lum is a certified Family doctor and a Chief Quality Officer and Hospitalist at the CHI Saint Joseph Health, a community hospital in London, Kentucky. Dr. Lum obtained her medical degree from The University of Sint Eustatius School of Medicine in the Netherlands Antilles and was Chief Resident at the University of Kentucky Rural Track/St. Claire Family Medicine. Dr. Lum is a co-author of the amazon best-selling medical anthology book “The Chronicles of Women in White Coats” and the visionary and co-leader of the upcoming book “Beyond Challenges”. Dr. Lum is also the blogger on theencouragingdoc.com where she writes and coaches international medical students & graduates (IMGs) on success blueprints for their unique pathway.

Dr. Mariame Kounta is a Director of Nursing at Pathlight, a nonprofit organization that serves people with disabilities. She grew up in Senegal before studying in the US. She has a Doctor of Nursing Practice from UMass Amherst, a B.S. in Computer Science from Western New England University, and an Associate Degree in Nursing from Holyoke Community College. While studying computer science and working as a direct support professional, she discovered her true calling through her work as a direct support professional and returned to school to further advance her career and give back to her community.

Today’s Diaspo Tip is about getting a mentor in the workplace and/or while in school. I never thought about getting a formal mentor - only had informal mentors here and there. After navigating school and career and seeing the importance of mentorship first hand, I decided to take mentorship more seriously; and I sought out and developed a formal mentor/mentee relationship. In this episode we discuss the benefits of mentorship and why you should seek one out/become a mentor.

In this episode, Mohamed Kamara, founder of InovCares, shares his experience growing up in Sierra Leone during part of the civil war and having to leave his country, when he was about 9 years old, to live abroad.
