Steven Cerri, in the EngineertoLeader podcast, reveals years of experience, tools, skills, knowledge, information, and perspectives that will allow you to create, build, and advance the engineer, scientific, or technological career you want.

No matter where you are in your engineering career, just entering the workforce or 20 years into your technical career, or even if you are manager, there are tools, skills, and knowledge that can leapfrog your career to where you want it to be NOW.

You can make mistakes by trial-and-error and by on-the-job experience. But mistakes and missteps can derail your promising career, no matter where you are on your career path.

Instead, why not avoid those mistakes and missteps by learning what to do, how to do it, and when to do it so you can create the long-term successful career you want and the career that gives you the life you want as well.

This podcast series is the distillation of Steven’s experience in government, commercial, large-scale, and small-scale start-up companies.

Steven has a B.S. degree in aeronautical engineering, an M.S. in geophysics, and an MBA. He has made the transitions that took him from engineer to general manager. He has faced many of the same challenges you face.

But lets be clear. This podcast is not necessarily designed to make you an engineering manager… unless you want to be. This podcast is about showing you how to create the career You Want… the Way You Want It To Be, wherever you are in your career life-cycle. That could be staying technically oriented or becoming a manager or an executive. It’s all up to you. It’s your career.

And one more point about what you will hear in these podcasts: If Steven hasn't used what he is sharing with you successfully in his career, you won't hear it.

E2L 011: The Future Job Market Requires a... New You!

Welcome to the Episode #11 of the Engineer-to-Leader podcast series. In Episode #2 Steven talked about your career path.  That information was based on the perspective of your overall career… that is, if you can make it happen in a relatively straight line.
But the possibility of a straight line career is probably limited.  As Steven has stated many times, your career will probably not be a straight line.
In this podcast, Steven will discuss the future job market and career opportunities for engineers, scientists, and technologists in the light of coming technological changes and advancements.
The future will more unlike the past than at any time in the last 50 years or perhaps the last 100 years. So what can you expect? What does the “crystal ball” say about where the opportunities will be and what will those opportunities actually demand of us?
Whether you are a veteran engineer/individual contributor with 20 years of experience or a new graduate, the answer to the question "What will the next 10 or 20 years bring" is critical to your success?

E2L 010: Micromanagement for Managers (and employees) Pt3

E2L 010: Micromanagement for Managers (and employees) Pt3

Welcome to the Episode #10 of the Engineer-to-Leader podcast series. In Episode #9 Steven gave three examples of how employees could avoid having THEIR managers micromanage them.
In this episode, Steven show managers exactly how to avoid being labeled a micromanager no matter how much oversight they require of a team or an employee on a task.
Most managers don’t want to be labeled a micromanager but they aren’t always sure the employee will be successful so they want to monitor the employee and the task closely.
But most managers treat management as an on-off switch.  They either have to monitor extensively and therefore are labeled a micromanager, or in an effort to avoid being seen as a micromanager, and in an effort to "empower" the employee, they don’t manage enough.
Management is not an on-off switch.  There are plenty of alternatives to either micromanaging or disappearing.
In this episode, Steven will show managers exactly how to monitor to the extent they want without being seen as a micromanager.
And this episode is useful for non-managers as well.  For those non-managers who want to become managers here is some insight into what you can expect to be facing as you move into management.
For those who are not managers or do not see themselves going into management any time soon, this episode will give you insight into what your manager has to deal with and will also give you some possible avenues for conversations with your manager around micromanagement and oversight.
So join Steven in this episode and get some specific advice on managing without micromanaging.

Episode #7: Take Initiative or be an Easily Replaceable Commodity

Taking Initiative is an absolute requirement for advancing and creating the career you want.  And for not being easily replaced.
Doing good technical work just isn’t enough to create and control your career path.
Avoid taking initiative and your technical competency will be viewed as a commodity, easily replaced by someone else who can do the same or better technical work.
But take initiative, and you will be seen as an organizational asset with opportunities opening up for you.
My latest episode (#7) of EngineertoLeader reveals the secrets to what, how, and under what circumstances to take initiative in your organization.
