Dublin-based illustrator Charlot Kristensen talks about THAT Irish Times cover, #BlackLivesMatter and Ireland's support of the arts

Dublin-based illustrator Charlot Kristensen talks about THAT Irish Times cover, #BlackLivesMatter and Ireland's support of the arts

The illustration Charlot Kristensen created for the recent cover of The Irish Times' Saturday Magazine which focused on being black and Irish will surely go down in history as one of the most iconic Irish images of 2020. We sat down in our respective homes (#stayhome, y'all) to chat about how this commission came about, working as an artist in Ireland and her upcoming graphic novel, What We Don't Talk About.
You can check out Charlot's work on her website at charlotkristensen.com and pre-order her graphic novel here.
Charlot is involved with the Dublin Comic Arts Festival, more on which here.
Alan Dunne, who Charlot mentions as a friend and great supporter of her work, can be found at alandunne.ie.
I mention Jordan Peele's Get Out, which is a stunning – and horrific – satire on race in America.

    Introducing Not Without my Sister

    Introducing Not Without my Sister

Thank you for listening to Episode 1 of Not Without My Sister, which we have tentatively titled, 'Not Without Our... Mother?' This episode is dedicated to, and focuses on, our Mother, who, for all of her Irish Mammyisms, has her own individual quirks and foibles which make her – we think – just interesting enough to dedicate an hour-long podcast episode to. We hope you enjoy it :)
If you have any topic suggestions, or subjects you'd like us to chat about, please do let us know! Leave a comment on our website or contact us via Instagram @rosemarymaccabe and @beatricemaccabe.
Here are a few of the things we reference throughout the episode. You'll find the transcription here.
Liadan Hynes' How to Fall ApartGoldie Hawn's "brain breaks"Dolly Parton's Imagination LibraryNot Without My Daughter, starring Sally Field and Alfred MolinaThe Vietnamese author whose book Beatrice discusses is named Phuc Tran. The book is Sigh, Gone. You can listen to Tran discuss the subjunctive, or its absence, in this NPR talk.Beatrice's favourite mystery Sindy Instagram account (a Sindstagram account?) is @Sindy_the_traveler
Not Without My Sister is presented by sisters Beatrice and Rosemary Mac Cabe. Editing is by Liam Geraghty. Original music by Cody D. Records. Original illustration by Lindsay Neilson.
Not Without My Sister is a production of The Warren.

#BlackLivesMatter | Erica Cody: Redux | on growing up black in Ireland, sports vs singing and the trials of the multi-talented

#BlackLivesMatter | Erica Cody: Redux | on growing up black in Ireland, sports vs singing and the trials of the multi-talented

This episode was recorded way back when, one of the first episodes of the first season of How to be Sound. This is me revisiting that episode – the only episode I've recorded with a person of colour, which is a massive failing on my part and something I will be looking to improve in the future. I've done a bad job of offering my listeners equal and fair representation of today's world, and for that I can only apologise. #BlackLivesMatter
You'll find Erica Cody on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram – and you can check out her music videos (you should) on YouTube, too.
Thank you so much for listening to How to be Sound. Please take some time to rate and/or review on iTunes; it helps other people who might like it to find How to be Sound! Producer extraordinaire Liam Geraghty's Meet Your Maker is also well worth a listen.  Mother of Pod. Just in case you don't know what a Billie Barry kid is... BE WARNED: this will scar you for life. Check out BIMM, Ireland's music school (it's not really like Fame, allegedly).  Step Up: High Water starring Jade Chynoweth is really, really good. I promise. Watsky: Moral of the Story is a good song to listen to (on repeat) when you're worrying about what other people are doing (unlike Erica, who's focused on her own sh*t).

Designs on Dublin: Julie Mc Loughlin of Jando sits down to talk about the creative spark that started the Jando fire

Designs on Dublin: Julie Mc Loughlin of Jando sits down to talk about the creative spark that started the Jando fire

Julie Mc Loughlin and her husband Owen left steady, full-time jobs to set up their own business after a spot of creative DIY piqued the interest of friends, family and, well, everyone who heard about their off-kilter wedding invitations. I sat down with Julie to talk about the business of business, creativity and conceptualisation, working from home and how Jando got off the ground.
This episode was, crucially, recorded before the current pandemic – and it's more important than ever to support Irish art so, if you're in the market for some new prints, check out Jando's offering.
