A Teacher and a Mentor
In this episode we get to discuss with Clay McElheny, an inspiring and passionate teacher that was my chemistry and physics teacher in high school. We discuss his education and career as a teacher and the importance of continually adapting and tailoring the lessons for the current students. We also discuss his less than traditional role as head of the engineering courses at his high school and how the entire format of traditional school could be at a pivot point where teachers can develop a more applicable style of learning. We talk about the rewarding aspects of teaching as well as the frustrating components. He also gives valuable advice for young teachers during interviews and the importance of being more upfront and assertive with their teaching goals. Teaching in Rural Florida
Today we interview Audrey, relatively new to teaching. this interview allows us to discuss her pth to becoming a teacher and he experiences early on in her career. Additionally, we discuss some of the struggles of teaching in rural areas as well as in a title 1 school, meaning poverty and low income families are common in the area. We also discuss the rewarding aspects of teaching from her perspective. Lastly, we discuss required teaching certifications and the effect of requirements being controlled at the state level.
