At first glance it's simply two wheels and a means of getting from HERE to THERE.

Upon closer inspection, you can see the spark of courage, grit, and determination infused into it's frame. A bold and ballsy declaration that GOOD ENOUGH is not GOOD ENOUGH!

A testament to a ferocious commitment that I will no longer settle for mediocracy or What ONCE was!

It's not going to be EASY and at times BRUTALLY HARD.
A Brutal painstakingly slow grind in that BIG CHAIN RING.......zig zagging your way along the journey.

It's never a normal clear cut perfect straight line. You want Normal.... Normal is a setting on Your washing Machine not a manner to ride through life!

    Man Up

    Man Up

If not for the beast within us we would be castrated angels – Hermann Hesse

I’m often asked …”Darren, have you conquered your demons?”
The “devil” didn’t make me do anything.

It wasn’t the “bad” in me or the “addict in me” that I can blame and side step the onus of personnel responsibility and ownership. Playing hide and seek with the blame game won’t tip the sacred scales of justice and fairness.

How can you have any ownership and stand in your presence, strength and humility if you have not taken any responsibility?

Do you want fuzzy wuzzy cozy or the skin tight feel of honesty?

Honesty comes in many shapes and sizes. and isn’t a fuzzy wuzzy cozy t-shirt. We can stuff honesty in the closet with the rest of our skeletons and shadows; hoping it doesn’t pop out and scare the absolute shit out of us.

Two years ago Insider Asia Magazine asked me What is Strength?

    Strength is an annealing process.

A samurai sword goes through a process of extreme heat to extreme cold over 1300 times to free it from internal stress.

    It's not about the Bike

    It's not about the Bike

It’s easy to Play Big when it follows the perfect plan and all the pieces fit so conveniently in your neat and tidy little box.

Can you still Play Big when you are squeezed?

Being squeezed comes in many different shapes, sizes and is usually followed by digging your heels in the sand….screaming THIS SHOULDN’T BE HAPPENING TO ME!

If you really want to be taken seriously then throw in a “THIS ISN’T FAIR”.

Usually the one’s arguing for these virtuous concepts of justice and fairness are left sitting on the curb watching as the White Stetsons ride on by.

The White Stetson isn’t going to be handed out to those who are afraid of a little work.

    200km is 200km

    200km is 200km

    Episode Notes

200kms on a bike is Playing Big.

Craig, Andrew, Ming, Mike and myself had little idea of what we were in store for on this ride from Phuket to Krabi. How can you have an an opinion on an experience that you have never experienced before?

It’s human nature to rely on opinions and beliefs. Belliefs and opinions can be some of the best hiding spots in the world. Doesn’t it make keeping score that much easier?

There is no where to hide on a 200km ride. Whining, complaining and excuses can’t be a stand in for integrity and character. You will need to ask yourself what do you stand for? Each answer would be as varying as the riders and their different bikes. One thing is for certain; five men set out to squash some beliefs and to have an experience.

There is a point when beliefs are not enough. Beliefs will not get your ass up a hill. Experience will get your ass up the hill. Integrity and character are action verbs: not sitting still nouns. Beliefs do not make you bulletproof.

Who wants to be bulletproof … I want to be vulnerable, human and have experiences.

Sooner or latter we need take our balls out of our throat and take that Leap of Faith.Saturday morning at the 55km mark is a good as time as any. For a little added mojo and swagger we agreed on a 12km race for coffee. Rules were pretty simple; loser buys coffee.

Hold on my friend…. where is my READY -set -go?

Don’t the majority of us wait to be READY?

Wait ,at least, until our balls are not lodged so tightly in our throat.

I’m not ready is a handy ace up the sleeve. Lay that trump card on the end of a Timing isn’t right flush and you have a guaranteed sure thing……. Beliefs vs. Experiences.

At the 90km we embarked on a truly memorable and picturesque climb. The kind of climb where you forget about trying to prove that the same old self doubt is untrue. You have an experience. An experience that leads you higher and higher into the trees. The only sounds you hear are the melodies of the chirping birds and the breathing of the two wheeled stallion next to you. That distant rev of a truck’s engine let’s you know that there still is a price to pay.

For those of you unfamiliar with Canadiana; one of her majestic marvels is a Flock of Canadian Geese flying in unison across the crisp prairie maroon sky.

    Teamwork.

    Collaboration.

    WE CENTRED.

The watch on my wrist said 8 hrs and 37mins. That’s a long gruelling day out on the bike and in the blitzing sun. Salty dry sweat crusted my black shorts. My feet were on fire in my bike shoes. Fire feet are part of the price you must be willing to pay. Sizzled would be a mild understatement; let’s try well done and seared.

Have you ever left a steak on the bbq for just a little too long?

You know, when that trim of fat starts to curl up and all but disappears. No amount of BBQ sauce will bring that steak back to life. Beliefs and opinions can’t resuscitate the steak.

Ming, with his radiant and contagious smile, called out 194 when we rolled into our finish line. We were 6kms short of the 200km mark. Starting at 7am that morning; it was now creeping up on 4pm. One hundred and ninety four kms is close enough ….. isn’t it?

At what temperature does Water Boil?

    What happens at 99°C?

One degree is all that separates water from boiling and not boiling.

Six kilometres might not sound like a big deal. If you are going to be impeccable with your word then six kilometres is the distance between Do or Do Not. Craig, Ming and myself headed back out on the road to finish our last 6 kms. Who knows why we didn’t add the six kilometres before we made the turn into the homestretch. It sure would have made for an easier use of will power. One thing is for certain : focusing on the problem will not create the solution.

When we arrived back at the FINISH LINE we saw Mike waiting with a front flat tire. Our support van was still out on the road. Mike immediate

    Playing Big

    Playing Big

    Episode Notes

    Podcast with Darren Scherbain
    www.bikeaholic.world

If you cant play BIG don’t even bother playing small.

These word of wisdom, that absolutely resonate to my core, were handed down to me from Jim.

Jim, who is also from Winnipeg Canada, grew up playing hockey in Wilcox Saskatchewan. The Notre Dame Hounds, a hockey team ,belong to a catholic boarding school in the middle of the Canadian Prairies.

The Hounds produce exceptional hockey players but also empathetic well rounded young adults. Anyone who has spent a winter on the Canadian prairies has had first hand experience with what it means when we say bone chilling cold, hope and resolve.

One day, Jim is in class just giving his class mate a real hard time. Jim is picking on this kid and doing his best to tear him down.Suddenly…. Jim feels a hand on his shoulder.

Jim looks up and is greeted by a firm and fair look of disapproval.

    James, the voice beckoned.

    Yes Father? Jim replied.

James, the stern yet compassionate voice continued,……..IF YOU CAN’T PLAY BIG DON’T EVEN BOTHER PLAYING SMALL!

What exactly does it mean to play BIG?

    To stand for something!

If you don’t stand for something then you are constantly going to get blown around like the sand in the wind. Swept up and scattered around until the next rendezvous with wishing it were different.

Playing Big is making that shift from being ME centred into a collective We centred.

Ask any of the riders who stood face to face with each of kilometres of the 700kms for Ride4Kids ………what was their Why?

Each Why would be as varying as the riders out on the road.

Infused into each Why would be the colloquial bond of hope. Hope is something we all share.

Hope is the spark for playing Big and the catalyst for putting one foot after another. One foot after the other; even when the torrential rain and wind are doing their best to test your resolve. After you wiped the sweat, rain, grit from your eyes and survived the wobble from the tottering wind you realize that Playing Big is an inside job.

Playing Big, hope, inspiration and to some extent character and integrity are all noble concepts. It’s one thing to idolize noble concepts and they do make a cute little Instagram post. That cute little post isn’t going to validate your case; when you are asked to embrace struggle as a means to growth and more importantly to put your ass in the arena.

It’s NEXT LEVEL to embrace and to commit to the sheer physicality of putting your ass in the arena. The “fire crotch”, drained legs and self doubt are all a part of the process and shouldn’t be interpreted as you are doing something erroneous.

The White Stetson isn’t going to be handed out to those who are afraid of a little work.

There is a price to pay.

Spending my summers on a farm, on the Canadian prairies, I was taught many valuable lessons. An honest day’s work was a full day of work. Your word was your bond; what you did was far more important then what you said you would do. There was no reap without the sow.

Self reliance and rugged determination wasn’t something that you could pick up from your weekly visit to the post office; it required patience and persistence.

On the farm I was taught to roll up my sleeves and honour our word. Blisters were formed on our hands from chucking hay bales all day and picking rocks in the fiel
