Maybe you’re a Property Manager, still wondering what the hell you’re doing in the game, this thankless existence, there has to be more right? Maybe you own the business, what started as a great venture, has sucked the life from you, and what started as promising, has turned into resentment. Maybe you’re a contractor or supplier, providing services to the block management sector, like everyone else, you want more leads, more clients and more money? Or work in another sector. Sound about right?

I figured if your reading this, well you’re an action taker and someone who realises there is more, and you’re looking for the answer. Well, welcome to my podcast!

My mission (damn that’s so corporate rite) goal (sounds boring) you know what I mean, is to help. That’s right, no big guarantees, but one lesson I learnt amongst many over the years, is to invest in myself. Reading books, watching videos, listening to podcasts, attending workshops and so on. I am always learning and want to help you do that TOO!

I want to share my experience’s and for some of you, that will help you in your journey, you will be able to relate, maybe I have done something that you're trying to do, or at the very least you might find it interesting.  The point is that we’re in it together on this journey, and finding ways to help each other is a simple WIN WIN.

Whatever your goals in this game, never stop learning, never stop absorbing content, and never stop listening!

Building a Brand - Interview with Jamie Willsdon, Director of the Future Group

In this entertaining podcast, Desmond is in conversation with Jamie Willsdon founder of the “Futures Group” who began with one division – ‘Future Lights & Electrical’ and have now grown to include divisions that mean they can offer a complete and comprehensive service to any block management company.

Jamie and Desmond discuss the vision for the Futures group and how creating a strong brand means every division needs to uphold a standard for the others. We all prefer to work with contractors we trust and this is a fascinating conversation where you can hear both sides – that of a contractor and of a block manager. They both value getting it right for their clients and agree that for every one good communication is vital, listen in and enjoy their lively discussion.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
We have a strong vision in place and are building a trustworthy brand.
Finding really good tradesmen is very difficult when you want to grow a business.
We have grown new divisions with the brand at the request of our clients.
If you work with someone you trust and who serves you well it makes sense to use them in other areas if they have the expertise.
We are now able to cover everything that is needed in a block.
We are known as a group so we can’t allow any of our divisions to let the others down.
Future lighting and electrical was the founding division.
Future fuel – looking to the future and we are working in blocks where cars will need charging using EVi charging points.
Future Fire - We were losing fire compliance work because it was being batched by our competitors.
Future Security – at the request of clients we brought in this division to facilitate all security needs.
Our vision is to continue to grow the brand in the block and property sector serving all our customers in the best way before we expand out into other sectors.

    Competition or Potential Partnership

    Competition or Potential Partnership

Desmond shares his knowledge on how you can turn the competition into a positive thing rather than a negative thing. He explains how you can use them to the better your business and why it’s important not to view them as competitors.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
See competition as a potential ally, you don’t have to gain from them in a monetary way. You can gain value in many other ways, you can learn from them and they can learn from you.
Competition could actually be a big resource for you, you don’t have to necessarily keep them all at arms length.
Competition should be considered as a positive rather than a negative. They might have skills you don’t have that they may share with you.
Having a pool of competitors can be extremely powerful because if you have a problem you could go to them and they are more likely to find an answer than if you were on your own.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Is the competition, the competition or a potential partner?’

    ‘See opportunity in a problem’.

    ‘No one had monopoly’

    What Does Happiness Actually Mean?

    What Does Happiness Actually Mean?

Desmond was struck by a Will Smith quote recently, in which he discussed his and his partner, Jada Pinkett Smith’s happiness. In this quote, Smith stated that instead of trying to make his partner happy, they should each instead focus upon their own happiness and present that to the other, thereby breeding this mutual happiness.

In this episode, Desmond is philosophically discussing happiness as a concept. What exactly is it and where does it originate? Is it merely a concept? And how can we translate these ideas to business?

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
Happiness should emanate from within on a person-by-person basis, and this happiness should be presented to others. By seeking to make others happy, we are attempting to force joy in others, sometimes as the expense of happiness.
One of the reasons customers come to you can be that they are unhappy in some capacity, and are seeking to be happy elsewhere. This doesn’t mean that they start their working relationship with you in a happy place.
If people don’t get what they fundamentally want, they won’t be happy. Is it about making them happy, or giving them the precise thing they want?
If you can’t make someone else happy, then why do we think we can make others happy? Is the only way to happiness, to give someone whatever it is they want? And by doing that, aren’t we making ourselves unhappy?

    BEST MOMENTS

‘My whole goal is to create something that is of value’

‘You should be happy and you should present that to the other person’

‘We feel like it’s our job to make them happy, and we might find that difficult’

‘I’m spitballing it out loud. There’s no magic wand here'

Pushing Through Physically and Mentally – with Alex Smith of Harrison’s Fund

Pushing Through Physically and Mentally – with Alex Smith of Harrison’s Fund

Many of the challenges and issues we face in our personal lives can affect the ways in which we conduct ourselves in the business world.

Alex Smith, the CEO of Muscular Dystrophy Research charity, Harrison’s Fund, has found personal success in setting numerous challenges for himself, most notably the physical and mental challenges of training for, and completing, Ironman challenges and marathons.

But all the challenges are worth it. Each step forward is made with the intention of raising money and awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a condition affecting Alex’s son, Harrison. In this very special episode, Desmond talks to Alex about the incredible physical and mental challenges Alex completes each day, and the empowering reasons why.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
Alex yearned to do something epic. Marathons and fun runs never appealed to him as they seemed to be events where people just turned up. Ironman events, however, are different as they force you to train wholeheartedly, because if not, then you won't make it all the way.
One of the most challenging aspects of competing in the Iron Man challenge was that Alex took his son, Harrison, with him. Harrison suffers from Duchenne, and the charity is dedicated to raising money to help Harrison and other sufferers.
Psychologically, there are always has to be a reason. During physical challenges, Alex is not just focussed on the moment, but also, and more importantly, the reason why he’s there. For Alex, the reason is Harrison, and the thought that he may save his son’s life is more than enough to keep him pushing through any kind of barrier.
No one knows the interiors and intricacies of someone else’s life or existence. You have no idea what challenges and issues they are facing day-to-day. We should endeavour to be compassionate at all times. Compassion should be our default.
Collaboration between charities can, surprisingly, be an issue. Alex began by offering open help and invitations to collaborate, but soon discovered that each charity has its own agenda, which leads to competition, much as in business.
Duchenne research has come an incredibly long way. Through effort and perseverance, the first treatments for a subset of boys with Duchenne has begun to take place.
Increasing awareness of Duchenne through charitable events is working. Big pharma are taking notice and trials and advances are far more ubiquitous than before.
Alex’s experiences have changed him forever. His impatience has turned to patience. Misunderstanding has turned to understanding. It is often through tragedy that we come to these realisations about ourselves.
Mastery comes through repetition. There is not short cut or fast-track. We need to decide on our goal and work relentlessly until we reach it.
If you decide that your business must run with a team, then make sure you trust that team to do that job for you. Put the right people in place and empower them.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘I wanted to do something big. I wanted to do something epic’

‘If you keep putting one foot in front of the other, you’re going to finish’

’I did it because I want to save my son’s life, and he can’t do Ironman’

‘I do my best never to judge someone’

‘I want a treatment that prolongs life’

‘What happened to me changed me in so many ways’

’Nobody told me to give up’

    ‘Repetition, repetition, repetition'

‘When you empower someone to do their job, they will fly’

How Speaking Can Grow Your Business

How Speaking Can Grow Your Business

Many of us have attended events in order to learn from the experience of others. We arrive and watch as those with influential names and aspirational stories ascend to the stage and recount their experiences in ways that drive us to be better.

But have you ever wondered how those people took that step to becoming public speakers? What caused them to make that decision? And how can we take those steps ourselves?

In this episode, Desmond discusses how speaking from a stage can help both you and your business to grow in all kinds of interesting and empowering ways.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
Apparently, more people have a fear of public speaking than they do of dying! People in general are scared of speaking in front of others; they lack confidence and self-belief.
Speaking on stage is incredibly powerful and has tremendous upsides. You are able to address numerous minds at once. Within twenty minutes you can speak to fifty people.
Speaking on stage positions you as someone in authority. Being selected to speak marks you out as someone who has achieved, and who is in a position to be able to instruct others. This is incredibly powerful.
We should yearn to be better at speaking once we are in a position to do so. Everything is a skill, and we can always be better. Speaking is a skill, and can be utilised in such a way that it can change the world. We should seek to improve and master it whenever possible.

    BEST MOMENTS

    ‘Instead of one-to-one, you’re speaking one-to-many’

‘You get to build rapport with more people in a shorter space of time’

    ‘What people think is important’

‘I should get some sound effects…'

    ‘Everything is a skill'

Moving Your Life And Business To Spain – with Chris Goodacre

Moving Your Life And Business To Spain – with Chris Goodacre

It’s hola from Malaga this time as Desmond speaks to Chris Goodacre in Malaga, Spain!

Chris helps British citizens and ex-pats to relocate from Britain to Spain, aiding in various compliance issues and ensuring that their lives transition seamlessly.

In this highly insightful conversation, Desmond and Chris discuss the impact of Brexit, the changing attitudes of British holiday-goers, the correct procedures when it comes to operating a business in Spain, and the many challenges he faces in integrating British people into the Spanish way of life.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS
Brexit has proved very challenging for Chris, and the imminence of it threatens his livelihood greatly. But conversely, it has been a huge boon to his business in the run up to the actual split from the EU. It has also made many ex-pats who already live there, put their business matters in order before the deadline passes.
If you’re an ex-pat and you’ve done your paperwork beforehand. you’re going to be okay as you will be a part of the EU. Freedom of movement will still be an issue, though.
Between 2004 and 2007, there was a lull in British visitors to Spain. This was due to Bulgaria and other eastern European destinations suddenly becoming more affordable and fashionable.
Some people choose to operate their businesses in Spain, but opt to remain living in Britain. In these cases, they require a Spanish-based business administrator. Business administrators have to be residents of Spain.
Things like registering vehicles, changing insurance policies, and ensuring tax and MOTs are in place, are among the most common problems Chris deals with. Many ex-pats grumble when they are faced with legal issues, and plead ignorance, but as Chris advises, they cannot afford to be complacent.
As few as ten percent of British ex-pats attempt to learn the Spanish language. But as Chris points out, there is hardly a need to do so if they relocate to the Costa Del Sol, as it has been so colonised by the British and British-speakers.

    BEST MOMENTS

‘Of course I hate Brexit. I live on the Costa Del Sol!’

‘You’ve got to get in before we get out’

‘People lose their blame on the plane’

‘One of my biggest bugbears is “But in England…”'
