    Transformation with David Brown Jr.

    Transformation with David Brown Jr.

This week we continue to explore the power of transformation with my special guest, David Brown Jrs (DBJ), Head of Operations Support and Business Controls for the US Businesses at Prudential Financial. He is also an author, coach and one of the coolest spiritual individuals I have known over the years. He shares with us how he defines transformation, but more importantly how he helps others step into their own transformational spaces.

By sharing his own experiences with transformation we learn the importance of going beyond the transformation itself and instead defining it by the change in perspectives of those involved. At its core, the alignment of individuals wrapped up in the transformation are the true guide of its success or failure. We also discuss the power of resistance and resonance and how emotions and experiences can shape our path to transition.

David Brown Jr. is an authenticity thought leader who has served as an operations executive, leadership coach and consultant. He has over ten years of experience as a senior leader in small and large companies across the financial services, professional services and facilities management industries. David previously held the position of Chief Operating Officer for a mid-size government contracting firm and currently is the Head of Operations Support and Business Controls for the US Businesses at Prudential Financial. He has led operating teams or provided strategic consulting to product and service lines that include credit cards, mortgages, facilities maintenance, asset management, government contracting and individual life insurance.

David took time away from corporate America to train as a coach, while also writing his first book, Letters for Lucia: 8 Principles for Navigating Adversity. During that period, he developed a new perspective on leadership development that centered on authenticity.

(2:30) How does DBJ “vibe” with the word transformation? How is this a part of his story?

(4:17) How does DBJ define transformation?

(6:12) What are some of the emotions that we associate with transformation?

(15:42) How did DBJ figure out that this was what he wanted to do, embracing and sharing the tools of transformation?

(18:46) What are some of the conditions that can make transformation successful?

(22:30) How do we overcome when we are resistant to change/transformation?

(28:40) What is the best way to measure transformation, success or failure?

Leadership and Life Lessons with Sr Marilyn, Founder of Mercy Beyond Borders

Our conversation this week is with Sr. Marilyn Lacey, RSM, Founder of Mercy Beyond Borders. Get ready to be challenged, inspired and moved to tears! Mercy Beyond Borders is a global organization that is forging ways for women and girls in extreme poverty to learn, connect and lead. Sr. Marilyn shares incredible stories of courage, determination and divinity in this conversation. It was a priviledge to provide a platform for Sr. Marilyn to share her story and the stories of so many women who are changing their lives through education and advocacy.

Sr. MARILYN LACEY, a Sister of Mercy, is passionate about making the world a more welcoming place. She’s been working with displaced peoples since 1981. Although she holds a Master’s Degree in Social Welfare from UC Berkeley and 4 honorary doctorates, she insists that the poor have been her best teachers. In 2001 Marilyn was personally honored by the Dalai Lama as an “unsung hero of compassion.” For two decades Marilyn directed the refugee and immigration programs for Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County, CA. She has also worked in refugee camps overseas.

(:45) Sr. Marilyn shares her story with us and why she has chosen this work.

(10:29) We learn about actionable tools that Sr. Marilyn shares to educate people on the impact they can have in the world.

(13:49) Sr. Marilyn shares with us the experience(s) of little girls, from South Sudan, that illustrates the positive impact her organization is having on people.

(23:24) How did the system get set up that put her organization, Mercy Beyond Borders, on a path to make a difference in other countries?

(29:42) Sr. Marilyn shares another example, from the region where MBB works, that embodies the powerful impact their school is making in South Sudan.

(31:48) We learn more details about the infrastructure, and the relationship with local government(s), that allows MBB to be impactful.

(35:16) What is the importance of understanding that there is no “over there”? Helping others has an impact on us locally since we are so interconnected around the world.

(40:42) A discussion about the “wrap around services” that MBB offers to ensure the girls are safe and can continue to get the education in their local countries.

(52:05) Who in Sr. Marilyn’s life are sources of support and motivation as she continues her work?

(54:22). How does Sr. Marilyn see Mercy Beyond Borders making an impact in the future?
