Jacob Unger was raised in the insular hasidic enclave in Brooklyn, New York.  He studied to become a rabbi his whole life.  He pondered the idea of becoming a lawyer after he became a rabbi and was married and settling into that lifestyle and someone told him he couldn't do it.  He proved them wrong.
