#119 Six Nations: surreal times as coronavirus puts rugby on hold

With the coronavirus throwing everything into flux, this morning we’re in the surreal situation of having a perfectly-poised Six Nations table that looks likely to be a good seven months away from any conclusion. Gerry Thornley and Gavin Cummiskey are in studio to tease out what it all means and where we go from here.

Documentarian Ross Whitaker is also in with us to talk about his documentary The Boys In Green which tells the story of Ireland in the Jack Charlton years and what it felt like to finally make a mark on the world stage. It goes out on RTE tonight.

All this in your Monday Added Time, with Malachy Clerkin and Pat Nugent.

Who do you support? How and why did that come to be? How important is shirt colour? Emmet Malone has carried out the most comprehensive survey on football fans ever in Ireland and he’s on the line to tell us all about it.

All this plus your first and best Cheltenham tip on your Monday Added Time, with Malachy Clerkin and Pat Nugent.

#117 Six Nations: A Familiar Story at Twickenham; GAA: Charging Galwegians, A Blight on Hurling

Stop all the clocks. Turn off the Tweet machine. Rugby is goosed, ruined and everything in between. England have beaten us to a bloody pulp and nothing remains but entrails and outrage. Gerry Thornley and Gavin Cummiskey are in studio to pick over the carcass of Twickenham. It's gonna get grim, baby. It's gonna get grim.

Keith Duggan was in Tuam yesterday to see the flourishing of Galway as contenders. They put the hurt on Tyrone to the tune of 19 points, the biggest defeat of Mickey Harte's time in charge. Can they go all the way? What's the difference between them and the league's other form side, Monaghan?

All this - plus an impassioned plea in favour of the black card from a Hurling Man - in your Monday Added Time, with Malachy Clerkin and Pat Nugent.

#116 ENGvIRE Preview, "Schools Rugby Turns Toxic", Six Nations Refereeing

#116 ENGvIRE Preview, "Schools Rugby Turns Toxic", Six Nations Refereeing

Twickenham week in the Six nations and all of a sudden, a Triple Crown is at stake. Who are England now, exactly? Are they the team that beat New Zealand in the World Cup semi-final or are they about to lose their third test match in four games? Gerry Thornley and Gavin Cummiskey tease it all out in studio.

Former international referee Owen Doyle got a huge reaction to his column in the Irish Times last week on supporter behaviour at schools rugby matches. He joins us in studio to talk about the latest worrying trends, Garda intervention and what can be done. While we have him, we drill down into some of the refereeing in the Six Nations so far and look ahead to what faces Jaco Peyper at Twickenham on Saturday.

Throw in a trip to Wexford to see a mad, mad day's hurling and that's your Monday Added Time, with Malachy Clerkin and Gavin Cummiskey.

#115 Six Nations: Big Win Over Wales, Tyrone v Kerry

#115 Six Nations: Big Win Over Wales, Tyrone v Kerry

With two wins from two gathered into the hold, the Andy Farrell train is rolling merrily along. Gavin Cummiskey and Gerry Thornley are in studio to break down Saturday's win over Wales and we hail Captain Johnny Sexton, for that is how we should address him now.

Tyrone and Kerry's league game was moved to Edendork and Ian O'Riordan managed to find his way there against all odds. The game was interesting for two individuals in particular - David Clifford and Cathal McShane - for very different reasons. We talk yellow cards, targeting players and jobs for the boys.

All this and a nation apologises to the Welsh women's rugby team for our crap showers. Free as the air you breathe in your Monday Added Time, with Malachy Clerkin and Pat Nugent.

#114 Six Nations, Super Bowl, FAI Bail Out

#114 Six Nations, Super Bowl, FAI Bail Out

The Six Nations is here and it is well in itself, French kissed to life on Sunday in Paris with the home side's win over England. Ireland's campaign got off to a steady start on Saturday, eventually overcoming a physical Scotland side but picking up some body blows along the way. Gavin Cummiskey and Gerry Thornley are in studio to break it all down and to look ahead to Wales's visit to Dublin next Saturday.

The FAI have received a bail-out that we're not supposed to call a bail-out, to the tune of somewhere north of €30m. With its immediate future apparently secured, the game can breathe a sigh of relief and set about putting its house in order over the coming months. Emmet Malone has the details and he joins us on the line..

Add in some SuperBowl chat - Hail to the Chiefs! - and that's your Monday morning Added Time, with Malachy Clerkin and Pat Nugent.

Replace Gavin C with Liam T and it’s perfect!

This is a great rugby pod but could be perfection if you could switch out the gossip-focussed Cummiskey with the far more knowledgable and insightful Liam Toland.

Excellent New Podcast – Up there with the best – could do with more variety?

Added Time is a welcome new addition to the already rich landscape of Irish sports podcast and immediately can be considered up there with the best in my view (Second Captains, Off the Ball, Game On etc). The reporting and commentary is excellent and (mostly) avoids pretending to be a comedy show and steers clear of the “Smashy and Nicey” approach to podcasting (which unfortunately has been the case of other sports podcasts). One suggestion I would have would be to maybe give a little more variety on a Monday? Today’s show (Monday 28th May) focussed basically on 2 games (1 GAA Football, 1 Rugby) and only gave a passing mention to other hurling, football, rugby, champions league, golf which happened over the weekend (Monaco GP not mentioned at all?). This meant that those not interested especially in the 2 games covered were sold short (and probably skipped to other podcasts to find what they wanted).
