Explore the world of LEGO Technic and listen to the stories behind the creation of the incredible LEGO Technic models.
The Origin of a Crazy Idea
What were the LEGO Technic Design Team thinking of when they came up with the crazy idea to build a 1:1 model of the Bugatti Chiron and make it drive using only LEGO Power Function motors? And how did it actually become a reality? Listen as Technic Design Manager Jeppe Juul Jensen tells how his team came up with the ultimate test for the Technic building system.
Making the Idea Actually Happen
Where do you start when you’re given the task of reproducing one of the world’s most striking automobiles using only LEGO Technic elements? And then told it has to drive as well! In this episode, you’ll meet the LEGO design team in the Czech Republic charged with making the impossible happen
The Ultimate Test: Will it Really Drive?
In this final episode, we follow the team as they arrive at the race-track outside Wolfsburg in Germany. It’s here they’ll find out whether months of building and testing will end in success or failure. Will a car, built from LEGO Technic elements and powered by thousands of small LEGO Power Function motors actually drive?
Rims & Tires
When the top speed of your supercar matches the take-off speed of a jet aircraft, it’s no surprise to hear that Jachin Schwalbe, Head of Chassis Development and his team in Wolfsburg, Germany, looked towards the aircraft industry while developing the tires for the Bugatti Chiron. Meanwhile in Billund, Denmark, LEGO Element Designer, Daniel Sri Sudarsono faced his own challenges designing the new rims that would match the low-profile look of the Chiron.
Front Body, Lights & Horseshoe Grill
With the Bugatti Chiron, it’s the smallest details that combine together to create the iconic overall look of the vehicle. Trying to recreate those details is the most challenging part of the LEGO model design phase. While the easiest solution would be to simply design new LEGO elements, LEGO Technic designer Aurelien Julien Rouffiange knows the real test of the Technic building system lies in finding workable design solutions using only existing elements.
Seats & Interior
Listen as Etienne Salome, Head of Interior Design at Bugatti explains the special challenge of marrying luxurious comfort with state-of-the-art performance in a car like the Bugatti Chiron. For LEGO Technic designer Aurelien Julien Rouffiange, trying to recreate the soft lines and materials of the Chiron’s interior in hard LEGO Technic elements was one of the most challenging tasks he faced while working on the model.
