The OMT Podcast Tanja Ohlson

We end this season with Tim Weiss, who co-hosted the first episode of the season. He talked at length about how he got into his research in Africa, he talked about the difficulties he faced and the rewarding work. He also talked about creating theory from the data he had collected, and how he created a community of interdisciplinary researchers with a similar interest in technology and entrepreneurship in Africa.

Christopher Yenkey is an Associate Professor at the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina

In this episode, we heard another really unusual story into the life as academic. But there is so much more: Chris talked about how he found the topics that are a “fit” with him and fascinated him and also resonated with the world, and in his case this is research in Africa. He talked about how emotional the grounded work was in his research, but also how it is necessary to get to the bottom of an issue. In addition, he had some advice on the “bifurcated job markets” for those fresh out of their PhD, and why the job market – and even going back on the job market – should not scare you.

Aleksandra (Olenka) Kacperczyk is Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship at London Business School in the UK. Her research covers entrepreneurship, innovation, social responsibility and mobility and labour markets. She was also a representative at large at OMT.

Olenka explained how her very entrepreneurial family sparked the questions in her that she now works on in her research. While talking about her journey to the questions she asks now, she shared tons of little gems of career advice for early-stage academics.

Lisa Cohen is an Associate Professor of Organisational Behaviour at McGill University’s Desautel Faculty of Management in Canada. She is also the Director for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) there.

This special episode is a collaboration with the Africa Tech Collective and co-hosted with Tim Weiss from Imperial College London. The guests, Nicolas Friederici and Marlen de la Chaux got PhDs from Oxford and Cambridge, respectively, and then decided to leave academia, but are still connected to research. They reflect on their journey and the reasons for their decisions, the differences between a job in academia vs industry, and on creating impact from the research they did and are still doing.
