    Ernie Macmillan: Character Study

    Ernie Macmillan: Character Study

He may not be as skilled at Apparition or Potions as he would like, but he was one of Alice and Martha's main inspirations for staring the Character Study series! A true Hufflepuff at heart, Ernie shows his loyalty to Justin, Cedric, and Harry, and though he may be a bit pompous, we rather like him.

"It's not Dom-null" she said simply

I love this podcast! Started listening from book 1, chapter 1 during quarantine and have just caught up on all the Book Cub episodes! The sisters are so fun and have great insights into the books that even a seasoned fan like myself had never happened across before. I love the inside jokes that set the sisters off giggling every time. One note that I have is their pronounciation of Domhnall Gleeson's name. I have waited until now to leave this review in case they adressed their most grievous error in a later movie cast. Alas, they didn't. I am Irish and can tell you that his forename is pronounced "Dough-noll", with a softer "D"-sound than you're used to. It's a really nice name and everytime I hear "Dom-null" I cringe. Keep up the great work, sisters--can't wait to dive into your character studies!

I finally boost Martha's self esteem ;) He Wooo!

Oh Mighty Sisters of Potterdom,
I beseech you to forgive me, I have waited quite some time to write this review. It was my goal to review your podcast when I had caught up and guess what…I have!! It only took me about 5 months. I believe I started in March around the time Storm Emma and the Beast from the East hit Ireland. Due to red weather alerts I had time off school (I’m a primary school teacher, elementary in the US) and had just finished another HP podcast which had mentioned your podcast as you both had a very similar name so I searched for you. I listen to podcasts as I walk my dog so I’ve been listening daily for all this time and I just want more! If you want the short version of this review skip down to the *.
Anyway here goes. This is a wonderful podcast, it is so detailed, engrossing, imaginative and fun. Alice and Martha remind me of the magic that HP cast over my childhood. My cousin who was also my neighbour was generally in the know about anything cool in the late 90s. She introduced me and my other neighbours to Harry Potter and her books were shared about between us. Then we played HP together. Then there was the wait for book 4, the 5 of us had to share two books and discussed it up to certain chapters if others weren’t finished. Around my 12th birthday the first film came out and me, my mam and my brother went to an old cinema (since gone) to watch but my brother didn’t get into it at all. Fanfiction helped to make the wait a little bit more bearable. Then I got my own book 5 and shed many tears when Sirius died. (There were many arguments on how to pronounce his name between us but I was right, he woooo, I was wrong about Kreacher though.) Then it was the shocking book 6, and finally we went to a midnight launch of the 7th book. I stayed up all night and read until morning. It was over and I was more than a little bit shaken. What now? I had grown up with these characters, they felt interwoven with my own existence. I was also leaving school that year and I felt like that was it, we were grown up and all was over. Or so I thought. So I studied, started my career, met my boyfriend, got on with life and held the books as fond memories. The films of course helped me to hold onto HP even though I nit-picked them to death, Pottermore came, then Fantastic Beasts and I listened to some podcasts here and there. Then in January this year I reread the series, convinced my boyfriend to watch the movies with me and started searching for podcasts again. Lo and behold it led me to Martha and Alice.
*If you are thinking of reliving your own HP memories, rereading the series or looking for a way to reconnect with your inner Potterhead give this podcast a try. I’m quite a fussy listener, a stickler for detail and find a lot of HP podcasts difficult to listen to as they have many hosts who get too excitable, very loud, don’t know their stuff or go way off topic. Thankfully I found Martha and Alice. They do an amazing job. They are well-informed, respectful and entertaining. They ask questions that I didn’t know I needed the answers to. They can be silly and goofy but they don’t get carried away. I find myself agreeing, disagreeing, laughing and feel as if I’m part of a special HP club with all the little inside jokes and titbits about their own HP experience. For non-US listeners it is interesting to hear about the word changes, the characters’ font and listen to them ponder some British expressions and phrasing. The movie casts are hilarious and I enjoy the sorting hat episodes too. This is the first review I’ve ever bothered to write on a podcast or on anything really and the first podcast that I’ve signed up to on Patreon. They are great motivators who buoy you up like you’ve rocked a really nice Patel twin plait! (I love how you say buoy and plait.) I truly appreciate their dedication and true love of HP, you slay Queens!
All the best,
Your stan, (you’re a wut? )
