S2, Ep 38: Sexism and Misogyny in Bollywood

S2, Ep 38: Sexism and Misogyny in Bollywood

I grew up watching Bollywood movies in the 80s and 90s. For those of you who are familiar with India cinema from that era you'll know that rape scenes were commonplace and love scenes were not.
India recorded 88 rape cases every day in 2019, and that's just the ones that were reported. Deep-rooted patriarchy has created a second class status for women in South Asia.
Does the way that Bollywood depicts women contribute to that problem or is India's film industry simply a reflection of its society?
And are things changing with the new wave of female centric films?
Have a listen to my take on this and let me know your thoughts too.

S2, Ep 37: Happily Ever After?

S2, Ep 37: Happily Ever After?

"And then they got married and lived happily ever after"....is how most fairytales end.
But getting married is just the beginning, and is it realistic to expect every day of your marriage to be filled with hearts and roses? Particularly as around 42% of marriages in England and Wales end in divorce!
My guest this episode is mother, teacher and blogger, Manraj Sanghera (AKA Northern Bindi) who was 22 years old when she had an arranged marriage. We discuss arranged and love marriages, the highs and lows married life, and we bust some commonly heard marriage myths...."always resolve an argument before you go to bed" No thanks! Zzzzzzzzzzzz...
Is it possible to live happily ever after in wedded bliss? or is marriage just damn hard work? Listen in and let me know what you think.

S2, Ep 34: Body Hair - The Struggle Is Real!

S2, Ep 34: Body Hair - The Struggle Is Real!

The subject of body hair is a sensitive one for most women, especially South Asian women. We're no stranger to the myriad of ways in which we remove the often very noticeable dark hair from our bodies and face.
In this episode my co-host Rummy and I question our relationship with body hair...shaving it, waxing it, lasering it, hating it, loving it, even flaunting it!
Just why are we so ashamed of having hair on our bodies? Why do we have such a distorted perception of what beauty should look like? At what age would we be ok with helping our daughters remove their body hair? What is the best method of hair removal? And do our bodies have to be completely hairless to feel sexy?
Rummy and I answer all these questions (while revealing a bit too much information!) and we hear other women's stories too. Unfiltered girl chat at it's best!
