Who’s a wounded healer? It’s any one of us who works in a caring profession and is bravely doing their own work, while helping others. My goal is to share the parallel journey we as healers walk along with our clients and how we attend to our own humanity while caring for others.

My podcast is about conversations and community building, what we can learn from each other, and how we can help heal each other. We’re cultivating a space where we celebrate vulnerability, authenticity and “showing up.”

It’s a place to meet people I think will inspire you, help you heal and grow – and who you can relate to at the same time.

I’m inspired by C.G. Jung’s “wounded healer” concept, where the healer’s own hurt that gives the measure of his own power to heal.

Another one of my heroes, Brene Brown, puts it best: “Mindfully practicing authenticity during our most soul-searching struggles is how we invite grace, joy and gratitude into our lives.”

Together, I hope this marriage of vulnerability and professionalism will inspire and entertain you...enjoy!

And his tool of choice is peer-reviewed, evidence-based research.

The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Transparent Should Owners be With Their Employees? With Rowan Tree Counseling Team

The Burnt Out Practice Owner: How Transparent Should Owners be With Their Employees? With Rowan Tree Counseling Team

I totally started this podcast on a whim––but not without a keen understanding of the pain points that group practice owners routinely encounter complain about. I’ve since realized that vital voices are missing from the conversation: group practice employees.
I extended an invitation via the BOPO Chicago Facebook group. Lucky for us, Andie Baumgartner, MA, LCPC, and Nadia Parfenova, MA, LCPC, owner and senior therapist, respectively, of Rowan Tree Counseling, answered that call. This convo is juicy, y’all!
We explore themes of responsibility, transparency, and intentionality from both sides of the group practice relationship. Our detour into the thorny subject of hierarchies and the urgency that often accompanies their abolishment is one that I didn’t anticipate yet totally appreciate.
GUEST BIO Andie Baumgartner, MA, LCPC (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and has been working in the mental health field since 2008. She completed graduate training and received a Masters Degree from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Andie began her career working in residential and community mental health settings, gaining experience working with individuals seeking relief from anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. She’s also worked extensively with clients recovering from traumatic experiences. She specializes in working with individuals seeking a greater sense of balance, who want to live a more values-aligned life, and those struggling with non-monogamous and other alternative relationships. Andie is anti-racist, Queer-allied, sex-positive, polyamory-affirming, and kink-knowledgable.
Nadia Parfenova, MA, LCPC (she/her) is a Licensed Professional Counselor and completed graduate training in Clinical Psychology at Roosevelt University in 2019. She has experience working with teens and adults experiencing severe anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and eating disorders in partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and outpatient settings. Nadia has also worked with individuals with autism spectrum disorder and those healing from traumatic experiences. Her approach to therapy is integrative as she pulls from both more directive approaches (CBT, DBT) and client-centered guidance and support to treat anxiety, depression, behavioral issues, trauma, relationship concerns, and self-esteem issues. Nadia is also well-versed in ERP and has found it particularly successful in supporting individuals struggling with OCD. She is a native Russian speaker and can provide therapy in Russian and English.

Lori Beth Bisbey - A Realistic (and Encouraging!) Timeline for Anyone Healing From Sexual Trauma

Lori Beth Bisbey - A Realistic (and Encouraging!) Timeline for Anyone Healing From Sexual Trauma

For the sake of mutual safety, this episode is preceded by a content advisory regarding sexual trauma and minor-attracted persons. Please take care of yourself as you need, even if that means skipping this conversation.
Your body belongs to YOU. I open with this power-stance of a statement because I didn’t get that message as a child, adolescent, or young adult. In fact, I’ve only just begun to really grow into that knowledge as I heal from sexual trauma. Here’s another a-ha! from this episode: healing takes time.
I’m grateful to folks like Dr. Lori Beth Bisbey for repeatedly reminding me of these essentials. She has been a champion of sizzling sex without shame for 35+ years, and her work destigmatizes fetishes, BDSM, and non-monogamy. Lori Beth’s healing journey also provides encouragement for survivors of sexual trauma alongside a healthy dose of reality.
GUEST BIO Dr. Lori Beth Bisbey (she/her) is a psychologist, accredited advanced GSRD (gender, sex, relationship diversity) therapist, sex & intimacy coach, author, speaker and tv personality currently starring in Open House: The Great Sex Experiment, CH4 in the UK.  She has been working with people for the past 35 years helping them to create and sustain their ideal relationships containing sizzling sex without shame. She has a weekly podcast, The A to Z Of Sex® since 2016 and is currently touring the UK speaking about kink, fetish, BDsM, and non-monogamy.

The Burnt Out Practice Owner: Where Do You Get Help When S— Happens at Your Private Therapy Practice? with Bianka Hardin

The Burnt Out Practice Owner: Where Do You Get Help When S— Happens at Your Private Therapy Practice? with Bianka Hardin

Who would have thought that practice ownership involved so much feces?! Now that I have your attention, lemme explain. Actually, I’ll let my guest, Bianka Hardin, PsyD, explain since it’s her story.
Bianka owns Centered Therapy Chicago (CTC), a 10-year-old group practice with 20 clinicians on staff. Her hilarious (and gross) tale perfectly illustrates the literal and metaphorical sh*t that practicer owners must deal with. Here’s the thing, though: while practice owners do have to take care of a lot, they don’t have to do it all. Bianka urges practice owners to consider the true value of their talents and weigh that against the cost of having to take on other tasks.
GUEST BIO Bianka Hardin, PsyD., (she/her) is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and owner of Centered Therapy Chicago, PLLC. She started CTC in 2014 with the mission to help children, adolescents, and adults improve their mental health and quality of life. She has been a trauma therapist for almost 25 years and is actively involved in her continuous learning and growth in this area from a personal and professional lens. She is very interested in cultural, systemic, and intergenerational factors that impact our health and well-being.

Eugene Ellis - Investigating Race and the Gaze of Society in Therapy, The Race Conversation

Eugene Ellis - Investigating Race and the Gaze of Society in Therapy, The Race Conversation

If you’re a white therapist, you could quickly tumble down a rabbit hole trying to reconcile all the work that’s ours to do regarding power dynamics within our field. There’s a detour that we, as white folks, are rarely required to explore: our relationship to whiteness.
I’ll save you some time by recommending Anne’s conversation with Eugene Ellis, the UK-based psychotherapist, speaker, director of the Black, African, and Asian Therapy Network (BAATN), and author of the transformative book The Race Conversation (soon to be republished in the US). “Eugene’s “therapist origin story” is a perfect example of white therapists' potential to be active agents of support,” explains Anne. This is only possible when we acknowledge our potential to be active agents of hurt.
GUEST BIO Eugene Ellis, psychotherapist, writer, and public speaker, has dedicated 20 years as the director and founder of the Black, African, and Asian Therapy Network, specializing in therapeutic work with Black, African, Caribbean, and South Asian individuals. Author of 'The Race Conversation' (2021), he delves into the intersection of race and trauma, non-verbal communication, and navigating oppressive patterns. Co-editor of 'Therapy In Colour' (2023), Eugene contributes to articulating new theoretical perspectives for therapists, both white and of colour, supporting therapy through an intersectional lens.

The Burnt Out Practice Owner: Uncertainty, Racism, and Burnout (Community Q&A)

The Burnt Out Practice Owner: Uncertainty, Racism, and Burnout (Community Q&A)

Who's ready for a very special call-in episode about practice ownership? Cast your mind back to the heyday of Loveline. I apologize if you're not of that vintage, as that's my only call-in show reference.
Are you, Dear Practice Owner, ready to stop chasing unrealistic goals, embody an anti-racist liberation mindset? Are you all set to own your weaknesses and strengths? OK, let's get into this virtual mailbag!
I've queued up two juicy questions plus one affirmation that every practice owner should have copied to a desktop sticky or irl fridge notepad. A word about my topic choices first. I chose these specifically because they're often repeated in the practice ownership conversations I've been privy to lately. And, full disclosure: I’ve agonized over the very same issues.
If you have a burning question or a topic that you'd like to hear discussed on this series, email me at sarah@headheartbiztherapy.com or send me a DM on Instagram @headheartbiztherapy.
