EP 1: What effect has lockdown had on young people’s mental health‪?‬ Scouts Podcast

    • Society & Culture

Content warning: eating disorders (specifically bulimia), depression, anxiety.

Welcome to The Scouts Podcast pilot, with your hosts, Maya Egbo and Gabriel Dedji.

Our first episode is in response to a difficult year under COVID-19, where many Scouts have had to sacrifice doing what they love and spending time together in order to fight a global pandemic. The episode focuses on the question, ‘What effect has lockdown had on young people’s mental health?’ and to answer it is mental health activist and our vote for ‘Queen of Everything’, Natasha Devon MBE.

Natasha gives us brilliant advice on how we can all protect our mental wellbeing in and out of periods of lockdown, discusses her love of (ex-Scout!) David Bowie and how music has helped her mental health, and lots more. If the episode has made you want to help tear down the taboo surrounding mental health, please consider becoming one of Scouts’ Wellbeing Champions – you can find more information and sign up at scouts.org.uk/wellbeingchampions.

If you or someone you know is effected by any of the issues discussed in the podcast, there are lots of people you can talk to:

· Contact your GP: your GP can provide help but there might be a longer wait.

· Contact NHS 111 (known as NHS 24 in Scotland): 111 is available 24/7 for urgent medical care.
