    The tribal population of the country was greatly affected by the oppressive  colonial forest laws and settlement operations meant for surveys and census by the British anthropologists, cartographers etc. This led to a string of movements which were affected by one cause or the other. Bhagirath Manjhi, a resident of the Taradih village of the Godda district of Jharkhand was leader of one such movement.

    Phulo-Jhano and Santhal Hul Revolt - Biography

    Phulo and Jhano belonged to the Murmu clan of the Santhal tribe in Eastern India, today’s Jharkhand. They were no less revolutionaries than their men counterparts.

    Their brothers, Sido, Kanhu, Chand and Bhairav were said to have spearheaded the famous 1855 Santhal uprising. It was an uprising against the British inroads into their life especially by encouraging freewheeler businessmen and exploiting moneylenders.

    Jaipal Singh Munda (Marang Gomke) - Biography (in Hindi)

    Jaipal Singh Munda was anything but a simple ‘forest dweller’; he was an exceptional man with an extraordinary career. Born a tribal in what is now Jharkhand, he was an Oxford graduate, he qualified as an ICS officer, he was captain of India’s hockey team that won gold in the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, he was a teacher in Ghana, a minister in Bikaner, and a representative of India’s tribal population in the Constituent Assembly. It is he who first established the Adivasi Mahasabha in 1938 to fight for a tribal homeland called ‘Jharkhand’.
