Join Jordyn Preston at the back of the class, where - along with friends and family - she’ll make fun of old white guys, mispronounce grecian names, and ask all the questions you’re too afraid to say out loud. Preston and her guests touch on a new philosophy concept each week, such as; how to win an argument, the concept of free will, and even the meaning of life. With the passion of an 80 year old professor but the knowledge and attitude of an 18 year old girl, the Back Of The Class Podcast is a philosophical wonder and everyone is invited.

Ethics for Reasonable People w/ Kate from America

Ethics for Reasonable People w/ Kate from America

It is the season 5 finale here at the back of the class, and as we look to close the pages of our Deontology unit we arrive at Prestons personal favourite framework. Working together with this weeks guest co-host Kate, Preston explores the normative ethical theories of both Contractarianism and Contractualism. This episode is filled with lots of DIY car noises and features an introduction into one of the few NOT DEAD white guys involved in Philosophy.

Side conversations stumble into areas such as: Nascar, ivy league, childhood negotiations, game theory, The Good Place, VPN’s, Owen Wilson, mutual agreements, girl bosses, the climate crisis, logical fallacies, office hours, America and freedom, Indiana, the dad stance, political science students, platinum rules, abortion, economic rational actors, The Little Mermaid and obviously Law & Order SVU.

Other philosophical topics covered in this episode: The social contract, Hobbes, Crito dialogue, Epicuras, Prima Facie Duties, The categorical imperative, Divine command theory, T.M. Scanlon, and What We Owe To Each Other

    Difficult Conversations With My Grandparents

    Difficult Conversations With My Grandparents

Sometimes philosophy topics can lead people into conversations they never expected to have. This week, I sat down with my grandparents to discuss Pluralistic Deontology, but found myself having in unexpected disagreement when the conversation shifted into the sensitive subject of discrimination. This episode is very different from ones produced before and I hope that it leads you to have your own difficult conversations with the people you love.

Of course it’s not all difficult as we still find time to talk about stuff we all agree on such as; cherry tomatoes, boarding school antics, children in trees, the stone ages, corporal punishment, old Montreal curriculums, and most importantly…. those whacky British people.

Other philosophical topics covered in this episode: W.D. Ross, the 7 Prima Facie Duties, moral conflicts, and ethical intuition.
