8 episodes

Hi! I'm Joe, and I host a weekly radio show with RareFM. This podcast features the recordings of those shows.

If you've never listened before, then welcome! This is a very casual philosophy talk show. Usually held at 10pm GMT on Fridays, there's discussion on a somewhat-wacky topic with some guests, with music and quizzy activities interspersed throughout. I also interact with the live radio chat a fair bit, so don't be too confused if I start referring to some random names.

In these episodes, there'll be no music, but the rest of the episode is whole and uncut.

    Philosophy of Ghosts

    Philosophy of Ghosts

Hello all, here's the eighth episode, where Lydia, Flynn and I talk about ghosts, what they represent and how we understand them, haunting and the somewhat related Derrida's hauntology, and some materialism. We sing (?) the theme tune, answer What Happened Today? and Find Bentham.

On a different note, as might be obvious, the thumbnails are homemade in GIMP. I wanted to share the fact that it is quite difficult drawing a good '8' with a mouse... almost as hard as drawing a decent circle freehand.

An Anarchist Take on Despicable Me

An Anarchist Take on Despicable Me

What exactly is the philosophy of anarchy? And what can we find of it in Despicable Me? Both questions and more are answered in this episode, where Henry, Ebani and I introduce some principles of anarchism and go hunting for their manifestations in the popular Despicable Me films. We also do the theme tune as well as features What happened today? and Find Bentham.

    The Stoics

    The Stoics

This week, Irma, Aris and I talk about the Stoics and how their school of thought applies to modern, everyday life. We discuss mindfulness, sport, and two quotes from Epictetus. I introduce a new feature, tentatively called Connect Five, which accompanies What Happened Today? and the ever-present interspersed music suggestions.

    Nostos and Algos

    Nostos and Algos

Welcome to the fifth episode! Not many of these left until I start working on something new. In this one, Jaden, Amélie and I discuss nostalgia, its roots and its place in the modern world. We also go into more depth about how nostalgia was considered similarly to other physical ailments of the time when it was first observed, its transition into the more psychological phenomenon it seems to be today, and the importance of the temporal and spatial aspects of nostalgia. Regular features are included.

    Epicureans Over The Hedge

    Epicureans Over The Hedge

This episode Mehdi, Harry and I take a bit of a diversion and talk about the Epicurean school of thought and apply it to the animated 2006 film Over The Hedge. We might speak a bit more about Over The Hedge than Epicureanism, but that's all part of the fun. Includes the theme tune and Finding Bentham. The sound quality is a bit scuffed on this one - hopefully the issue will be sorted soon.

    Utilitarian Jack and the Beanstalk

    Utilitarian Jack and the Beanstalk

I can't have a philosophy show named after Bentham and not discuss one of his more famous ideas. In this one, my guests, Ryan and Grace, and I discuss a very popular English fairy tale through the lens of utilitarianism. We go into absurd amounts of detail about the story itself (forgive me any inaccuracies), and theorise the fate of Jack's family's cow as well as those of other relevant beings. Comes with all the usual trimmings.
