    About the Guests



    Bill Benson has worked in aging and health for more than four decades.  As former staff director for the Senate Labor Subcommittee on Aging, Benson oversaw the successful reauthorization of the Older Americans Act (OAA) in 1992. Under his leadership, that year’s reauthorization included Title VII, Subtitle B–Native American Organization and Elder Justice Provisions — the first federal law created to address the issues of elder abuse and elder justice for Indian elders.

    He established The Benson Consulting Group in 1998. In 2002 he joined with Sue Andersen to form Health Benefits ABCs (HBABCs), an independent consulting practice specializing in aging and health policy & services, program development, assessment and strategic planning, and training. Their clients include a number of national, state and private organizations, including n4a, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs, the American Health Quality Foundation, National Adult Protective Services Association, American Society on Aging, the Population Association of America. American Planning Council, Institute for Health & Aging at the University of California, San Francisco, the Maryland Department of Aging, the New York State Office for the Aging, the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, WISER and others.

    From 1993 to 1998 Mr. Benson was the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Aging at the Administration on Aging (AoA) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. He was the acting Assistant Secretary for Aging in 1997. Mr. Benson spent eight years in various capacities in the U.S. Congress including staff director of the Subcommittee on Aging of the Senate Labor and Human Resources Committee, staff director of the Subcommittee on Housing and Consumer Interests of the House Select Committee on Aging, and with the Senate Special Committee on Aging. Mr. Benson played a major role in the 1987 and 1992 amendments to the Older Americans Act including the creation of Title VII, the OBRA ‘87 nursing home reform legislation, numerous Medicare and Medicaid provisions, women’s health, pension and other notable legislative initiatives.

    Prior to moving to Washington, D.C., Mr. Benson was with the California Department of Aging including serving for more than five years as the State Long-Term Care Ombudsman.

    He is a past president of the National Citizens Coalition for Nursing Home Reform, president of the Environmental Alliance for Senior Involvement & the American Association for International Aging, and chairs the advisory board to the Center on Global Aging at Catholic University of America’s School of Social Work. He is in his 13th season as host of First Person, a weekly series of interviews with Holocaust survivors before live audiences at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

    Dorian (aka Dori) Mintzer, M.S.W., Ph.D., is a Licensed Psychologist who provides Psychotherapy,  Career/Life Transition Coaching, Couples Relationship Coaching, Executive Coaching  and Speaking. She is a Licensed Third Age Coach and a 2Young2Retire Certified Facilitator. She facilitates workshops and speaks to community and professional groups on topics related to mid-life issues, retirement transition, psychology of money issues, spirituality, and positive psychology.

    About the Guests

    Barbara Greenspan Shaiman, M.Ed., began her career as a teacher, developing curriculum for at-risk youth, and later directed Eisenbud & Associates, an executive search firm that specialized in recruiting physicians and healthcare executives nationally. As a leader in this field, she presented frequently on human resources issues at conferences. In 1995, she founded Champions of Caring, a non-profit organization that has empowered more than 10,000 youth in Philadelphia and South Africa to become leaders in service and active, engaged citizens. The daughter of Holocaust survivors, Barbara’s mother was incarcerated in the Auschwitz Concentration Camp and is the sole survivor of a family of 65 people. Her father worked for Oskar Schindler, on whose story Steven Spielberg’s film Schindler’s List was based. This family legacy, coupled with her professional experience and work with Champions of Caring, have motivated Barbara to help others to live their legacies. For 20 years, Barbara has created programs that have inspired and empowered youth with the skills to create service projects to address local and global issues and create cultures of caring within their schools and communities.



    Peter Hecht is principal of Hecht Investment Group, an affiliate of Janney Montgomery Scott. to discuss family financial planning issues for “club sandwich generation” baby boomers. Peter is a Certified Financial Planner and specializes in estate and retirement planning.

    About the Guests

    Jon Roesser was named general manager of Weavers Way in 2015. Before being named general manager, he was Weavers Way’s Human Resources Director, a post he had held since October 2008. Before coming to Weavers Way, Roesser worked for 13 years at Adecco Corp., a global HR services company, in a variety of roles including director of Adecco’s six-branch Philadelphia region. A native Philadelphian, he graduated from La Salle College High School (’88) and La Salle University (’92), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. He also has a Master of Arts in English from Arcadia University (’12). He lives in Cheltenham with his wife, Sharon, who owns a horticulture business, and sons Christian, 9, and Samuel, 6.

     



    Jerome Kerner, RA is a Certified Sage-ing Leader.  He has been an architect since graduation from Pratt Institute in 1965.  For the past forty years he has been involved in personal growth and psychological and spiritual development such as; Core Energetics with Dr. John Pierakos, Family Systems with Hellinger Institute D.C. and certification in Gestalt Therapy from Southern CT State University.  He has published Be It Ever So Humble, a dialogue at the threshold of family ancestry and culture that explores the hidden self as reflected in the home.  He has been active in community as past President of the Town of Lewisboro N.Y.Library Assoc., Chairman of the Affordable Housing Comm. and presently Chairman of the Town Planning Board.  Jerome has been married since 1979 to Alexis Johnson PhD. They have three children and seven grandchildren.
