She is the recipient of the 2019 Reflecting Freedom/House of Mandela award for her work in Education.

In this episode Khalil will have a Truth & Reconciliation Conversation with Desmond Meade the President of Florida Rights Restoration Coalition and Kevin Gay the Founder & CEO of Operation New Hope. Desmond led the successful passage of Amendment 4 in 2018, a grassroots citizen’s initiative which restored voting rights to over 1.4 million Floridians with past felony convictions. Kevin’s faith-based organization and its Ready4Work reentry initiative have been recognized by 4 past Presidential administrations for its impact on reducing recidivism.

Melissa created Florida’s first legislatively funded Conviction Integrity Review unit which overturned the wrongful convictions of 2 men, Clifford Williams and Nathan Myers, who served 43 years in prison.
