From 1868 to 1885 AD, Bharatendu created many plays, acted in many plays himself, built many theatres and tried to establish Hindi theatre. In 1944, late actor Prithviraj Kapoor started Prithvi Theatre.
Staging of street plays was not so easy in slave India.

• Every actor was prepared. They had only one objective – to arouse opposition among the people against British rule.
Safdar Hashmi was murdered while performing street play, his incomplete play was completed by his wife after 48 hours. The name of the play was ‘Halla Bol’.
Only two things are necessary for theatre, the audience and the actor. All other means can be abandoned.”
