    PHOTOSLUT LIVE: NOEMA

    We are living out best GQT (IFYKYK) life - live and direct from 17 Midland Road Gallery! Join us in the usual chaos of conversation as we speak to OG No.1 photoslut Michael Swann all about 'Noema' at his Bristol book launch and exhibition! In 1961, in the small Spanish village of San Sebastian de Garabandal, four young girls had an apparition of the Virgin Mary. They entered a state of ecstasy in which they became completely unaware of their surroundings and sensory perceptions. Reportedly, witnesses would pinch the girls, pierce their skin with needles, lift them up and drop them onto rough rocks, and yet they remained entranced. The light and presence of the Virgin is all they claim to have experienced. Twenty years later, in the town of Medjugorje, Bosnia & Herzegovina, six children also had simultaneous visions of the Virgin, with similar ecstatic qualities. These visions have persisted for the last forty years, with several of the seers continuing to experience regular visitations today, often in the presence of hundreds of pilgrims.     IT ONLY makes sense to have Shawn as my guest for this ‘come back’ episode, his influence was integral to the manifestation of the podcast as a concept back in the day, I hope you enjoy this BUMPER Christmas, not Christmas special with Dr Shawn Sobers!   Shawn-Naphtali Sobers is Professor of Cultural Interdisciplinary Practice at University of the West of England, Director of the Critical Race and Culture Research Group, and teaches photography. As a visual anthropologist he has carried out many research projects, ranging from legacies of slavery, African presence in Georgian and Victorian Britain, disability and walking, Rastafari language and culture, creative citizenship, and Rastafari and Ethiopian connections with the city of Bath.     Yours until Niagara Falls

    SERCHIA is a residential and not-for-profit gallery residing in a Victorian home on a hillside in Cotham, Bristol. Founded in the summer of 2021, we celebrate contemporary artists, who make visible what would otherwise never be seen. The gallery hosts an artist-in-residence programme, ‘Artwork from Home’ welcoming artists to stay with us, to create artwork unique to the space, and to interact with the community through a constellation of public and private events, artist talks, workshops, and openings. Curated by Christine Marie Serchia, the gallery is named after her father Frank Serchia who famously built 'Serchia Drive', a driveway to their family's home in Youngstown, New York. Later, Frank built a boat dock on the Niagara River (Serchia Beach), and an outdoor dining area in the garden (Serchia Bistro).
