FootballTalk - Episode 145: What next for relegated Sheffield United and Huddersfield Town plus Leeds United and Hull City's promotion chances

On this week’s podcast, YP football writers Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton to discuss the relegation of Sheffield United – confirmed with a 5-1 defeat at Newcastle United. Where did it go wrong for the Blades and where do they go from here?

On a similar theme, Huddersfield Town are also heading down – save for some goalscoring miracle – after a 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham City effectively condemned them to relegation to League One. Is Andre Breitenreiter the man to lead them back up or will he make way for yet another head coach?

Staying in the Championship the team also assess the respective promotion hopes of Leeds United and Hull City.

FootballTalk - Episode 144: Barnsley's shock sacking of Neill Collins, Huddersfield Town's worst nightmare and Sheffield Wednesday's bid for The Great Escape

On this week’s show, The YP’s football writers, Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall, join host Mark Singleton to discuss the latest news from around the Yorkshire football scene.

They discuss the shock sacking of Neill Collins by Barnsley, the Reds in a poor run of form, but still in the play-off places with just one game to go.

Huddersfield Town’s 4-0 defeat by Swansea City dealt their survival hopes a bitter blow and the prospects of them beating the drop with two games to go now look bleak, while Rotherham United looked to the future after appointing former boss Steve Evans as the man to bring them back up to the Championship.

Sheffield Wednesday were able to climb out of the bottom three for the first time since the opening weekend of the season and could clinch safety this weekend if they beat West Brom at home on Saturday and results elsewhere go their way.

They assess Leeds United’s automatic promotion chances after victory in a seven-goal thriller against Middlesbrough, who will be hoping to bounce back as a serious contender for promotion in 2024-25.

Sheffield United’s 4-1 defeat to Burnley also comes under scrutiny as the panel look at what Chris Wilder needs to concentrate on this summer.

FootballTalk - Episode 143: Hull City's play-off push, Leeds United's top-two bid PLUS the relegation battle facing Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday

FootballTalk - Episode 143: Hull City's play-off push, Leeds United's top-two bid PLUS the relegation battle facing Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday

In this week’s show, Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall join host Mark Singleton to discuss Hull City’s chances of making the Championship play-offs. With Just three games to go, they remain six points adrift of sixth spot.

Leeds United’s hopes of clinching a top-two automatic spot took a hit at the weekend with a home defeat to Blackburn Rovers – but results elsewhere meant they didn’t lose too much ground on automatic promotion rivals Ipswich Town and Leicester City.

At the other end of the Championship table, Sheffield Wednesday are still in the fight to avoid the drop, both they and Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town sitting just a point from safety with three games remaining.

Also this week, Stuart picks out his star player of the week, while Leon plumps for the best team from Yorkshire over the past few days.

FootballTalk - Episode 142: Millers drop but will Blades, Owls and Terriers follow them and are Leeds destined for the play-offs?

FootballTalk - Episode 142: Millers drop but will Blades, Owls and Terriers follow them and are Leeds destined for the play-offs?

On this week’s show, The YP’s football writers Stuart Rayner and Leon Wobschall, join host Mark Singleton to discuss the latest issues surrounding the Yorkshire football scene.

They start at the New York Stadium and what needs to happen next at Rotherham United after relegation after just two seasons in the Championship was confirmed and how they avoid being a yo-yo club between the second and third tiers of the English game.

Sheffield United remain near-certainties to go straight back down to the Championship but it seems they are going down fighting, putting in a battling performance in a 3-1 defeat at Liverpool before snatching a point in a 2-2 draw with Chelsea.

Huddersfield took one step forward and two steps back, following up a 1-0 win over Millwall with a 4-1 hammering on the road at Preston – do they have what it takes to beat the drop? Likewise Sheffield Wednesday who fought back to grab a 2-2 draw against Norwich City following on from a 2-0 win over QPR – do they have what it takes to beat the drop?

And, at the other end of the Championship table, Leeds United fell to their first league defeat of 2024 at possibly the worse time, their chances of automatic promotion not helped much later in the week when they were held 0-0 at home by Sunderland. Is it the play-offs that beckon for Daniel Farke’s team?

Also, Stuart and Leon pick out their player and team of the week.

FootballTalk - Episode 141: Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday's ongoing battle to beat the drop PLUS Doncaster Rovers' resurgence - The YP FootballTalk Podcast

Sheffield United looked to have found the winning formula only to be denied by Fulham in a 3-3 draw at Bramall Lane meaning they now sit 10 points from safety with nine games remaining and ahead of Thuesday’s trip to Anfield to take on Premier League high-fliers, Liverpool. Is there any hope of survival?

Continuing the theme of those teams from the White Rose struggling down the bottom of the standings, Stuart Rayner, Leon Wobschall and host Mark Singleton also discuss the survival chances of Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday.

Also, it is time to salute the patience of both fans and owners at Doncaster Rovers, who made it five wins on the trot to give themselves an outside chance of making the League Two play-offs. Can they gatecrash the top seven with a continued late surge and extend their season?

They look at the fallout for both Harrogate Town and Bradford City following their latest derby meeting, as well as looking at Hull City’s chances of making the Championship play-offs.

Sheffield United’s future outside the Premier League also comes up for consideration, as does this weekend’s Easter programme which sees Championship, League One and League Two clubs play twice in four days.
