That time we said CHEERS! to aliens in 1983 (and other SETI messages to extraterrestrials) | ASMR

That time we said CHEERS! to aliens in 1983 (and other SETI messages to extraterrestrials) | ASMR

In 1983, two Japanese scientists, Masaki Morimoto and Hisashi Hirabayashi, pioneers in the field of radioastronomy and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI), got inebriated as they celebrated the Tanabata star festival. They decided to use a radio telescope at Stanford to send a message to one of the brightest stars in the sky, Altair. In the message was information about our planet, our evolution, the human species, and even a high-spirited sign-off, sending both the English word "TOAST" and the Japanese equivalent, "KANPAI" (乾杯). And I love the playful sentiment. 40 years later, their scientific progeny are listening for a response. Spoiler alert. We haven't heard back... yet. But we also explore the nature of these and other messages to possible intelligent alien life out there listening like we are. We touch upon SETI, the Arecibo message, and a few other attempts at establishing a first contact with an extraterrestrial alien species. The Basics of Relativity: Light Speed, Time Dilation, and the Expanding Universe | ASMR

The Basics of Relativity: Light Speed, Time Dilation, and the Expanding Universe | ASMR

Tonight we explore the strange reality of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity and what it means for 3 dimensional beings born into a 4 dimensional Universe. It predicts our birth from a singularity in an expanding Universe, the contraction of space at the speed of light, and both black holes and the infinite time dilation at their horizon. It's bizarre that space truly compresses and time actually slows down deep inside gravitational wells and near the speed of light. We literally observe supernovae billions of light years away exploding at half their normal speed. So let's find out about the history and basics of relativity.   ▸ Want to leave a tip or connect?:    Video credits: Carrol and Ostlie (textbook I used): https://amzn.to/3QtiABm TNG Simulations https://www.tng-project.org/media/ NASA/STSci/ESA Davis and Lineweaver (2003) https://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0310808 Nolan, C. The Universe in a Single Graph | ASMR

Tonight we're drawing and explaining a spacetime diagram of the entire universe. The universe is far larger than 14 billion light years, and expanding way faster than the speed of light. Let's find out the true nature of the universe.   ▸ Want to leave a tip or connect?:   See youtube video description for full credits.

old 1969 LIFE magazine: Apollo 11 LEM, retro ads, chatGPT (GPT-4) | ASMR ramble

old 1969 LIFE magazine: Apollo 11 LEM, retro ads, chatGPT (GPT-4) | ASMR ramble

(These podcasts are the audio from my Youtube channel videos found here: ) Tonight we're browsing a really cool retro 1969 LIFE magazine I found at a local flea-market thrift store. It's main article is about the LEM (Lunar Module) which was the tiny spacecraft that detached from the Apollo Command Module in lunar orbit and sent Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descending onto the lunar surface to be the first ever humans to step foot on another world. We also browse the rest of the issue and look at some of the more interesting ads of the late 1960's. Lot's of unique and memorable marketing of clothing, appliances, insurance, and of course, booze and cigarettes. Additional context: This issue was from March 1969, and that Apollo 11 mission didn't happen until July of 1969, so it's fascinating to travel back in time and think about the anticipation of the event just 3 months later. I'm trying my best to continue making the most interesting and relaxing content I can, and the donations and the love in the comments is always a big encouragement. -Rich   0:00 10 pivotal moments from 1969  15:05 beginning to browse LIFE magazine 28:47 using GPT-4 to look up facts about ads and companies 51:41 Apollo LEM article 1:29:42 more GPT-4 prompts (about the Sears company) 1:54:29 ad introducing the McDonald's Big Mac in 1969  #space #sciencefacts #science #letsfindout #ASMR #astronomy ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ► If you'd like to show support for the channel: ▸ Donate: Buy me a coffee?: https://ko-fi.com/letsfindoutasmr ▸ Patreon (monthly donations):  ▸ PayPal (one-time donation): ▸ Amazon link helps the channel: ▸ My Amazon Wishlist:   ► Say Hello: ▸ 📧 Instagram: ▸ 📧 Discord: https://discord.com/invite/PyUfaN7 (* I'm not very active here yet) ▸ 📪 If you'd like to mail me something: Let's Find Out ASMR (Rich) P.O. The Story of Cosmology: The Big Bang, Dark Matter, Dark Energy & the Great Mysteries of the Universe

The Story of Cosmology: The Big Bang, Dark Matter, Dark Energy & the Great Mysteries of the Universe

These podcasts are just the audio from my Youtube videos. If you'd like to see visuals too, visit my channel, Let's Find Out:   This is an exploration of the greatest discoveries in cosmology, the great scientists and astronomers behind them, and the still unresolved mysteries of the Universe at the most extreme scales of time, gravity, and distance across the deepest space. This is part of a larger script I wrote for the James Webb Space Telescope: The Big Bang, Dark Matter, the Cosmic Microwave Background, Cosmic Web Filaments, the End of Greatness, Inflation, Dark Energy, and there's still so many questions about the nature of our Universe. Tonight we learn what the current lambda cold dark matter big bang model of the universe says happened from the first few seconds to the first few million years after the universe was thought have come into existence. We learn what older cosmological theories evolved into and how our conception of light, matter and energy has changed over that last few centuries as our understanding of them has deepened. We learn what the biggest mysteries of physics and cosmology still are and about the huge gaps in our understanding of the cosmic dark ages, the dark matter halos around nearly all galaxies, and how the still-mysterious phenomena of the big bang, inflation, and dark energy is propelling galaxies apart. Thanks so much for watching.
