Boat Radio - The Boat Galley - 65. Why we DIY

When is ‘doing it yourself’ the best option? Carolyn Shearlock and husband Dave are a pretty handy pair, wielding everything from paintbrushes to a monkey wrench. But that doesn’t mean they’re expert boat mechanics and it certainly doesn’t mean they’re as quick as the pros when it comes to fixing a problem. Added to that, there are some jobs that even the most gifted amateur should leave to the experts. However, often the good professionals have a busy schedule and just as frequently they come with a hefty price tag. So how do you decide when it’s best to DIY?

    Boat Radio – Shipwrecked! – Part 1

    Boat Radio – Shipwrecked! – Part 1

Hear how Regina, Alan and their three children survived the most terrifying night of their lives in the grip of a tropical storm.

“I wasn’t sure whether I was going to actually get to save everybody”.

Dashed repeatedly against a reef and then slammed down onto a sandy beach.

“We had Anna, who was two, and going into the water in those conditions, even in a life jacket, her chances of survival were small”

This is horrifying and compelling in equal measure.

“From the time we hit the reef to the time I saw the beach, I knew there was a really good chance I was going to lose my wife and my youngest”

Neither Regina nor Alan were novice sailors. This could happen to anyone.

This is part 1 of an interview that was first broadcast in September 2016. You’ll find part 2 either below or to the right of this post, depending on your podcasting app.
