In "Hardcore History" journalist and broadcaster Dan Carlin takes his "Martian", unorthodox way of thinking and applies it to the past. Was Alexander the Great as bad a person as Adolf Hitler? What would Apaches with modern weapons be like? Will our modern civilization ever fall like civilizations from past eras? This isn't academic history (and Carlin isn't a historian) but the podcast's unique blend of high drama, masterful narration and Twilight Zone-style twists has entertained millions of listeners.

    BLITZ Human Resources

The Atlantic Slave Trade mixes centuries of human bondage with violence, economics, commerce, geo-political competition, liberty, morality, injustice, revolution, tragedy and bloody reckonings. That sounds like a lot, yet this show merely scratches the surface of this enormous subject.

Daunting... but incredibly rewarding

Just as in the title, to start this podcast (at least for me) the first time it took me some courage and a serious lack of anything else to listen to while on my way for a very long trip.

Nowadays every time there’s a new episode, “Hardcore History” gets on top of my list. It really provides for a useful refreshing of the time periods it deals with, and it’s wonderful how it tries to put you into the perspective of people at the time.

To have a sample of that, I encourage you to start with the first episode of the WW1 series, with the dilemma faced by the Austro-Hungarian empire in answering to the murder of its emperor by Princip.

Finally, the voice of the narrator is intense and clear, and he knows how to play with it to create a certain tone and mood. It got me through an eight-hour drive with just 3-4 short stops for a coffee - better than a Redbull.

Incredibile

It’s just incredible. You listen for hours at a man speaking in your ears without breaks nor music nor anything else than his voice. And when he finishes (and maybe it’s 5 hours later) you say “oh, already finished?”

The best

I wish Dan Carlin was all my professors.
