Do men prefer red lipstick or a more natural lip color on a woman‪?‬ And Everything! Debates, Confessions, Hacks and Myths..

Consciously men have all sorts of varied feelings and prejudices about women wearing lipstick, regardless of the shade, but studies (one in particular carried out at Manchester University in 2010) have shown red lipstick does attract more attention from men than any other colour. So it is more or less a given that if you wear red lipstick more men will look at you, and you will hold their gaze for longer. It will not necessarily ensure they have a favourable opinion of you, but for better or for worse you’re less likely to blend into the crowd.

In short if you want attention in a general sense I would recommend wearing the reddest of red shades of lipstick you can find. Do some men find red lipstick unattractive? Yes, but even those men still find it eye-catching, and it’s not going to make them dislike a woman they are otherwise attracted to. Don’t worry about undertones, seasonal trends or harmonising colour temperatures. The lizard-brain cares not for such things.

However I’ve found that when women ask about what ‘men,’ like they often have a particular man in mind, and it should be pointed out that general advice is not applicable in such cases. If you’re wondering whether or not Mark from accounting, or the guy who works at the coffee shop likes red lipstick you’ll just have to ask him, and why not? There are worse ice breakers.

For maximum impact you should take the following steps: apply a heavy coat of matching liner (filling in the entire lip area) before staining the lips with a brush (use a pressing and rolling motion) and applying a coat of clear gloss/lacquer. Wait for it to dry then re-apply the colour applying a slight tint to it (the tiniest dab of white on the same brush will work, or mix them on a pallette/compact mirror) and use it to highlight the centre of the lower lip (if you have very full lips you might also highlight the centre of the upper lip too.) Finish with a soft, well-blended highlight above the lip-line. If you’re using powder to highlight mix it with a dab of moisturiser or even water to give it a dewy finish. Short of cosmetic procedures this is about as dramatic as it gets.
