It's a bit of a revisit, because we first looked at this film during Sci-Fi London 2023, but looking back at that review: https://youtu.be/Yh1aM4iPxsY I didn't really do things justice. So thanks to the great Matt Hulse, we were able to not just take another look at the feature, BUT, sit down with the creative mind (one of them) behind the project and really get into the mechanics of the creation, production, casting, all that good stuff. We also touched upon A.I, creative techniques, and the perception of material. It was a really fun time, which could have been a lot longer, you won't want to miss it!!! 'The Bystanders' is the feature directorial debut from Gabriel Foster Prior, which he co-wrote with Jack Hughes. Peter Weir (Scott Haran) – a former child genius at chess who is now an inconspicuous office drone – is recruited precisely for his anonymity to become a Bystander, a kind of empowered guardian angel tasked with watching over, and invisibly helping, an individual subject.



Peter is trained by jaded Bystander Frank (Seann Walsh), who out of boredom proposes that they swap subjects, so that Frank now has ‘middle-class girl from Kent’ Sarah (Georgia Mabel Clarke), and Peter has feckless loser Luke (Andi Jashy), whom Peter hopes to transform into a winner so that Peter himself can win the award for Bystander of the Year, and make up for losing a chess contest decades earlier.



Hilarious rivalry ensues, as misanthropic Frank, who can only see the world through ‘Frank-tinted glasses’, sets about, purely for the lulz, undermining Luke’s – and Peter’s – newfound success.

The great folks at The Horror Collective passed on this new indie feature framed around the perils of immigration. We then sit down with the young woman whose family history was the impetuous to step behind the camera and imbue her DMA into the film! There were so many technical issues with this, BUT, Karyna was a legend and powered through, and I think we ended up with a really insightful 90 minutes which you're going to love!!! 'Silence of the Prey' is directed by Michael Vaynberg & Karyna Kudzina (her feature directorial debut), which Karyna co-wrote with Saro Varjabedian. In a desperate bid to secure a future for her child (Isabella Bezell), an undocumented immigrant mother (Karyna Kudzina) takes a caretaker job. 'Stephen' is the feature directorial debut from Melanie Manchot, which she co-wrote with Leigh Campbell. A hybrid narrative fiction/documentary, STEPHEN is shaped by the raw and moving energy of one young man's quest to transform his early life of violence and addiction and of his desire to both act and live differently. The film is centred around Stephen Giddings (Ste @stegiddings), who, growing up on the Quarry Green Estate in Kirkby, Liverpool, was confronted with addiction from an early age - both in the lives of those around him, and eventually in his own. At just 26 years old he was giving up on life. What follows is an intimate journey as Stephen auditions for and takes on a role in a movie, questioning whether he can fulfil his ambitions and realise one of his big dreams: to become an actor.
