Intéresser la jeunesse européenne à l’agriculture et à la vie rurale : une priorité vitale pour la direction générale de l'agriculture et du développement rural (DG AGRI) de la Commission européenne. Alors que l'âge moyen des agriculteurs dans l'Union européenne est de 57 ans, de moins en moins de jeunes embrassent les carrières agricoles, rebutés par des conditions de vie précaires.

Assurer le renouvellement générationnel dans l’agriculture est crucial pour notre sécurité alimentaire et la cohésion sociale dans l’Union. Pour y parvenir, l'amélioration de la qualité de vie dans les zones rurales et l'aide aux jeunes agriculteurs pour lancer ou développer leurs activités sont au cœur de la stratégie de la DG AGRI.

Lors de la récente Semaine européenne de la jeunesse à Bruxelles, la DG AGRI a organisé une session en petits groupes pour les jeunes agriculteurs, les activistes ruraux et les jeunes d'une vingtaine d'années intéressés par le retour à la terre. Objectif : en savoir plus sur les aspirations et les préoccupations de ces jeunes, afin d’ajuster la politique en faveur du renouvellement des générations.

Le 43e épisode de "Nourrir l’Europe" vous emmène en Irlande et en Espagne pour rencontrer deux jeunes actifs ruraux qui sont venus jusqu’à Bruxelles participer à la Semaine européenne de la jeunesse. Haude Blanc, de la DG AGRI, elle-même originaire d'un petit village du sud de la France, nous parle également des défis et des opportunités liés au renouvellement générationnel dans les campagnes.

With 57 being the average age of a farmer in the EU, and alarmingly few young people attracted to farming - even fewer of them young women - the European Commission’s directorate-general for agriculture and rural development (DG AGRI) is investing in reversing this reality through generational renewal.

Improving the quality of life in rural areas and assisting young farmers to launch or expand their activities are at the heart of DG AGRI’s efforts, which recognise that Europe’s food security, social cohesion and even its historic character will disappear without the presence and commitment of young people.

During the recent European Youth Week kick-off event in Brussels, DG AGRI held a breakout session for young farmers, rural activists and twentysomethings interested in a life on the land. The purpose of the session was to learn more about these young people’s aspirations, concerns and perspectives, to better tailor policy in favour of generational renewal.

Our 43rd episode of Food for Europe travels to Ireland and Spain to meet two young people living in rural areas, and to follow them to Brussels as they contribute to the European Youth Week event. We hear also from DG AGRI Haude Blanc, who hails herself from a tiny village in southern France, about the challenges and opportunities of generational renewal in the countryside.

Das Durchschnittsalter der Landwirte in der EU liegt bei 57 Jahren. Es gibt alarmierend wenige junge Menschen, die sich für die Landwirtschaft interessieren – und noch weniger junge Frauen. Darum investiert die Generaldirektion Landwirtschaft und ländliche Entwicklung (GD AGRI) der Europäischen Kommission in Massnahmen zur Umkehr dieser Entwicklung, und zur Unterstützung der Erneuerung der Generationen.
Die Verbesserung der Lebensqualität im ländlichen Raum und die Unterstützung von Junglandwirten bei der Aufnahme oder Ausweitung ihrer Tätigkeit stehen im Mittelpunkt der Bemühungen der GD AGRI, die sich bewusst ist, dass die Ernährungssicherheit, der soziale Zusammenhalt und sogar der historische Charakter Europas ohne die Präsenz und das Engagement junger Menschen verloren gehen werden.
Während der jüngsten Europäischen Jugendwoche in Brüssel veranstaltete die GD AGRI eine Breakout-Session für junge Landwirte und Aktivisten im ländlichen Raum. Ziel der Veranstaltung war es, mehr über die Wünsche, Sorgen und Perspektiven dieser jungen Menschen zu erfahren, um die Politik besser auf die Erneuerung der Generationen abstimmen zu können.
In unserer 43. Folge von Food for Europe reisen wir nach Irland und Spanien, um zwei junge Menschen zu treffen, die in ländlichen Gebieten leben, und um sie nach Brüer ssel zu begleiten, wo sie an der Europäischen Jugendwoche teilnehmen. Außerdem sprechen wir mit einer Beamtin der GD AGRI, Haude Blanc, die selbst aus einem kleinen Dorf in Südfrankreich stammt, über die Herausforderungen und Chancen der Generationserneuerung auf dem Lande.

C’est dans un climat de tensions que s’est tenu le Salon International de l'Agriculture (SIA) du 24 février au 3 mars 2024 à Paris – un incontournable pour Nourrir l'Europe. Alors que la colère paysanne grondait dans toute l’Europe, les agriculteurs français ont fait entendre leur voix dans les allées du Salon. L’édition 2024 aura été marquée par de nombreuses manifestations.

Comment, dans ce contexte, confronter les points de vue sans exacerber les crispations ? Le débat modéré en public par Olaf Bruns pour Nourrir l’Europe a tenté de relever le défi. Son thème : que fait l'Europe pour l'agriculture ? Autour de la table : Christiane Lambert, présidente du Copa, le Comité des organisations professionnelles agricoles de l'Union européenne, et Catherine Geslain-Lannéelle, directrice en charge de la stratégie et de l'analyse politique à la Direction Générale de l'Agriculture de la Commission européenne.

Tour à tour, elles sont revenues sur ce qu’apporte l'Union Européenne aux citoyens en général, et aux agriculteurs en particulier : sécurité alimentaire, marché commun, aides... Elles ont aussi abordé la frustration des agriculteurs, noyés sous un 'tsunami administratif', et les réponses à lui apporter – notamment les mesures proposées récemment par la Commission.

Das Thema: was tut Europa für die Landwirtschaft? It was in a climate of tension that the Salon de l’Agriculture International (International Agricultural Show) was held from 24 February to 3 March 2024 in Paris – something that Food for Europe simply couldn’t miss.

As farmers’ anger rumbled across Europe, French farmers made their voices heard at the show. The 2024 edition was marred by scuffles and damage. How, in this context, can we evoke opinions and perspectives without exacerbating tensions? The public debate moderated by Olaf Bruns for Food for Europe attempted to rise to the challenge.

Its theme? What is Europe doing for agriculture? The programme’s two guests were Christiane Lambert, President of COPA, the Committee of Professional Agricultural Organisations of the European Union, and Catherine Geslain-Lannélle, director in charge of strategy and policy analysis at the European Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture. They discussed what the European Union brings to citizens in general, and to farmers in particular, including food security, a single market and financial support. They also discussed the frustration of farmers who say they are drowning in an 'administrative tsunami' and how to respond to it – including the measures recently proposed by the Commission to lighten the burden.
