272: Social Science Transferable Skills for Viable Careers with Dr. Sandy Oh
In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Sandy Oh, to discuss transferable skills for social science majors. Dr. Sandy Oh has a PhD in cultural anthropology and has taught writing at UC Irvine while leading UX research for a LA-based civic tech organization. As an award-winning qualitative researcher and DEI advocate, she’s contributed to projects like "Godfather of Harlem" Season 2, nominated for NAACP Image Awards.
Her global career includes launching an online learning platform in South Korea and collaborating on educational innovations, all while leveraging her diverse background in anthropology and writing to inform and inspire.
On the show, she shares her background in cultural anthropology, outlines the essential skills she developed during her studies, and explains how these apply to various careers including user experience (UX) and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
We explore her career journey, highlighting the importance of creativity, adaptability, and seeking out opportunities within and beyond academia and she provides listeners with valuable practical advice on leveraging your social science skills to navigate and succeed in various professional fields.

Our guest is Joy Valerie Carrera and she is a first generation Guatemalan-American & proud ADHDer from New York.
She found her love adventure while studying at Rochester Institute of Technology and getting to study abroad, that made her brain curious and ended up 26 countries later and working in four different industries from advertising, technology, immigration, microfinance and social entrepreneurship.
Following her brain led her to now being a social impact business & productivity coach helping folks harness their strengths to build a life with more joy.
Together, we explore topics such as the importance of creating personalized systems, managing energy, and advocating for oneself in healthcare settings.
We also discuss the significance of planning joyful moments and tiny adventures to maintain a positive outlook amidst the challenges of chronic pain and neurodivergence.
