Rising through Racism
Growing up as a mixed-raced child in a predominately white community, Mariah Barnett faced racism at an early age. It all came to a head during high school when she made the decision to stand up to students who chose to fly the Confederate Flag on a daily basis.
Listen as she recounts this traumatizing experience that negatively impacted her at a time that should've been the some of the best years of her life. Mariah take us through the physical and mental anguish this experience caused her but also explains how she chose to move forward allowing her pain to propel her into becoming an activist, while also giving back to youth through teaching in hopes of being the teacher she wished she had seen throughout her education.
