Lakers Lose to Cavaliers as Anthony Davis Exits Early With Fever. Plus, Why is Pat Beverley Starting?

Lakers Lose to Cavaliers as Anthony Davis Exits Early With Fever. Plus, Why is Pat Beverley Starting?

Eight minutes into Tuesday's game in Cleveland, Anthony Davis went to the locker room. Surely most Lakers fans freaked out, given AD's injury history, but this turned out to be (relatively) benign - flu like symptoms. Davis apparently had a 101-degree fever. Nothing that should keep him out long-term. That said, when Davis left the game, the Lakers chances of winning diminished significantly, especially with Wenyen Gabriel out as well (shoulder).
So shorthanded, the Lakers stuck with one of the NBA's best teams, a squad that had lost one game on its home floor. Only with a late fourth quarter push were the Cavs able to put the Lakers away. This despite LA shooting barely 16% from 3-point range, and (aside from Thomas Bryant) struggling to score efficiently.
They hung in thanks to a combination of effort and confidence, finding ways to make a play whenever Cleveland made a push. After, though, nobody was particularly impressed. LeBron noted that this is how they expect to play. There was nothing to learn, necessarily, about their character or makeup.
One big question people are starting to raise? Why is Patrick Beverley getting the kind of playing time he does? Despite being a massive negative offensively, and often mismatched defensively playing against wings when a real wing (Troy Brown) is available?
So is it loyalty from Darvin? Are team leaders (of which he's surely one) making it clear they think Beverley should be playing? Yes to both? But particularly if Dennis Schroder is also going to start, this choice from Ham seems odd and potentially problematic.

    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky

SEGMENT 1: The Lakers lose AD to the flu, then lose Tuesday's game to the Cavs.

SEGMENT 2: What went wrong for the Lakers on Tuesday, and why there are some encouraging things to take away.

SEGMENT 3: Patrick Beverley is trending again. Probably not a good thing...

Capitanes GM Nick Lagios discusses running Mexico City's G-League affiliate and his former job with the Lakers and South Bay Lakers

Capitanes GM Nick Lagios discusses running Mexico City's G-League affiliate and his former job with the Lakers and South Bay Lakers

The Lakers are rolling of late, but with an off-day between Sunday's win over the Wizards and upcoming back-to-back games in Cleveland and Toronto, the Kamenetzkys thought it was a good time for a different conversation earmarked for a while on this show. The NBA is both looking to build its global footprint and G-League's profile, and these goals meet with the Capitanes, the NBA's team in Mexico City. Now a little more than year into its existence as a full member of the league, General Manager Nick Lagios has been tasked with turning this squad into a sought-after destination for players looking to showcase themselves for NBA scouts, as well as help the larger goal of making the NBA in Central America a viable concept.
It's no easy assignment, but it undoubtedly helped that Lagios gained experience working several years inside the Lakers, whether for the South Bay Lakers or the big club, with jobs ranging from video intern with the lakers (just like Frank Vogel!) to Director of Basketball Operations & Player Development with South Bay. Lagios saw firsthand how the Lakers' Scouting Department (undoubtedly the strongest part of the basketball department) operates with consistent success and identifies talent that's not as obvious "go draft Zion! In the meantime, Lagios, a big-time Laker fan in real life, got to see how the purple and gold sausage is made, which was a surreal experience.
Lagios' conversation with Andy Kamenetzky covers all that, plus the Lakers and Kobe Bryant's popularity in Mexico.

Segment One: Lagios' impressions of the Lakers unpredictable season, and his insights into the challenge of getting players to accept a different role, like Russell Westbrook's embrace of coming off the bench.

Segment Two: How are teams like the Lakers (and hopefully, Capitanes) consistently successful at finding less heralded NBA talent? How do guys like Austin Reaves and Alex Caruso go undrafted altogether?

Segment Three: What are the challenges of growing a league in another country? Plus, has Lagios ever seen a Kobe mural in Mexico?

    Hosts: Andy Kamenetzky

Anthony Davis Scores 55 as the Lakers Beat Wizards. Plus, DeRozan/Vucevic to L.A.?

Anthony Davis Scores 55 as the Lakers Beat Wizards. Plus, DeRozan/Vucevic to L.A.?

The first long road trip of the season is off to a perfect start for the Lakers, who followed up Friday's win over Milwaukee with another victory, this time beating the Wizards 130-119 in Washington, a game the Lakers basically led throughout. It was another monumentally dominant performance from Anthony Davis, who laid a double nickel on the Wiz (that's 55 points to the uninitiated) along with 17 rebounds and three blocked shots. All of this on an uber-efficient 22-30 from the floor.
LeBron James, meanwhile, had another very strong game (29/8/6), and Lonnie Walker IV chipped in with 20 points. The Lakers have now won eight of ten, and crept to within two games of .500 and ever so close to the mix of teams in the Western Conference's (early season) playoff conversation.
The dominance of Davis makes many things the Lakers do seemingly less important. On another night against another team, for example, maybe Darvin Ham's choice for starting lineups, and maybe even closing lineups, which included both Dennis Schroder and Pat Beverley. Broadly, it feels like Ham will have to make some choices about who he wants to play, because on the surface at least it seems like insisting on big minutes for his veteran guards (all of 'em) means some odd combinations on the floor.
Nice to have first world problems again, because when the team sucks, it really doesn't matter if the rotation isn't maximized.
So this run makes trade rumors that much more interesting. So many of the things that seemed like they'd drive a trade when the Lakers were 2-10 look different after winning eight of ten. Are the needs the same? Is it a given that you'd trade Westbrook? What do they need back? So is the rumor about Westbrook to Chicago for DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vucevic the type of trade that works in LA's interest?

    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky

SEGMENT 1: The Lakers win in Washington, and Davis is just crushing people.

SEGMENT 2: More on AD,a great start to the road trip, and what has made Russ effective.

SEGMENT 3: Would Russ for DeRozan and Vucevic make sense?

BONUS EPISODE: Anthony Davis Scores 44 Points as the Lakers Score a Huge Win Against Bucks!

BONUS EPISODE: Anthony Davis Scores 44 Points as the Lakers Score a Huge Win Against Bucks!

The Lakers kicked off their first big road trip of the season in spectacular fashion, winning their best game of this season and probably last year as well, 133-129 over the Bucks in Milwaukee. Once again, it was Anthony Davis leading the way. This time, he blew up for 44 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, extending an eye-popping, MVP caliber run to eight games. The Lakers got plenty from the rest of the squad, including 27/11 from LeBron James, 11 dimes from Russell Westbrook (who had assists on his first five possessions Friday night), and Lonnie Walker IV, who poured in 14 points in the third quarter.
Basically, every Laker who stepped on the floor brought something useful to the table. Now winners of seven games in their last nine tries, the Lakers go to Washington on Sunday with a real chance to turn this road trip into something special.
It's been a minute, but Lakers fans might actually be excited about the team. Like, legitimately looking forward to the next game.

How Good Do the Lakers Need to be During a Brutal December Schedule?

How Good Do the Lakers Need to be During a Brutal December Schedule?

The Lakers have won six of their last eight games, and now head out on the road for their first extended road trip of the season. Six games, five coming against teams currently good enough to qualify for the playoffs, in one form or another (Milwaukee, Washington, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Toronto) and a sixth (Detroit) coming at the end of the trip. This long roadie is just one bit of a brutal December schedule that includes only four home games, over 10,000 miles of travel and a ton of playoff-caliber opponents.
While they've made some progress, it'll be a big thing for the Lakers to avoid losing ground to the rest of the conference between now and the new year.
So how good is good enough, whether on the trip or for the month more broadly? Is 3-3 enough? 8-8 for December? How far below those marks can the Lakers go without causing too much damage, since they're entering the month four games under .500 at 8-12?
Are they capable of playing consistently enough to tread water until things lighten up? Focused enough to win all the winnable games, whether against the Pistons or Charlotte or Washington?
Meanwhile, viewers on the Locked On Lakers YouTube page weighed in on Wednesday's LeBron-focused episode on a variety of issues, including on how he might be kept fresh throughout games to have the type of fourth quarter we saw in Wednesday's win. One suggestion: Lighten his load earlier, so he's not worn down. Use Austin Reaves, Russell Westbrook and Lonnie Walker (among others) to run sets and create opportunities, rather than running everything through LeBron. Let him be on the end of some plays, rather than the beginning.
Could that make a difference in his play? And who should be in the rotation, now that Darvin Ham's roster is getting close to fully intact?

    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky

SEGMENT 1: The Lakers have a big road trip coming. How good is good enough?

SEGMENT 2: Do you believe the Lakers are good enough to make it through the month without losing too much ground?

SEGMENT 3: Did the Lakers find a formula Wednesday that works best for LeBron?

The Lakers Bounce Back, Beat Portland 128-109 Behind Anthony Davis, LeBron James and Austin Reaves

The Lakers Bounce Back, Beat Portland 128-109 Behind Anthony Davis, LeBron James and Austin Reaves

The Lakers played three great quarters against Indiana Monday, before blowing a huge lead in the fourth quarter. Wednesday against Portland, they again built up a huge lead in the final period, but decided this time to finish strong. The result: a 128-109 win over Portland at the Crypt. It was a huge bounce back for the team, fueled by a strong game from LeBron James (31 points on only 18 shots), Anthony Davis (27/12 with three blocks) and Austin Reaves (22 points), who continued his strong play through November.
This was exactly what the Lakers needed to restore a little confidence before heading out for the first extended road trip of the season, starting Friday in Milwaukee.
Davis and James found a great formula in the fourth quarter, as well, a place where James has often been inefficient and Davis has flat disappeared. 23 points between the two (with Davis leading the way), a higher usage rate for Davis than James. Overall, they found more ways to get Davis moving around and LeBron worked far quicker than he has often done this year, allowing defenses to load up against him and generally taking the air out of L.A.'s offense.
And Reaves! So much to like with what he's doing, and how. If this is who the Lakers have going forward, it makes a big difference in what they present other teams. He can be part of a "middle class" to the roster that has been missing in a big way.

    HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky

SEGMENT 1: The Lakers bounce back, remove some of the sting from Monday's loss. And Austin Reaves is thriving.

SEGMENT 2: LeBron bounces back, not just in what he did but how.

SEGMENT 3: A great finish for Anthony Davis, and a nice fourth quarter formula for the team's stars.
