    Episode 210 - Justin Lyons

    Episode 210 - Justin Lyons

Justin Lyons, best known as the guitarist for The Band Six (the touring band for Korean pop group BLACKPINK), explains the K-pop phenomenon and shares how he became the go-to guitarist for YG Entertainment. Lyons (stage name: Guitar Slayer) shares how he got his first break, what he learned from his early years of touring with Eric Roberson, and the artists (Prince, Jimi Hendrix) that have inspired his aesthetic and playing style.

We talk about his creative projects—from a signature guitar to a footwear line and a production studio—to his quarantine experience, which involved starting up a video series, and even working at Amazon.

We also play a clip from the latest single, "As Is."

    Episode 209 - Philip Lassiter

    Episode 209 - Philip Lassiter

We're back! In this episode, trumpeter / arranger / producer and 11x GRAMMY winner Phil Lassiter talks to us from the Netherlands, where he and his family have lived for almost a year. After college, he moved to Texas for a job, and as he says, that's when he truly felt like "school was in session," musically speaking. He tells me about how he met Michael League and the origins of Snarky Puppy, growing up in the gospel scene and recording/arranging with Kirk Franklin, and what is was like working with the late Justin Townes Earle.

Phil spent a few years touring with Prince and was in charge of putting together an 11-piece horn section, and he gave me the details on the audition process and what it was like working with the Purple One. (If you're into stories about Prince, this episode is for you.)

We also discuss his forthcoming album, "Live in Love," and how it came to feature musical legends like TOTO's David Paich and Juan Luis Guerra.  We also share a clip of "Sugar Coat Me (ft. Durand Bernarrr), the latest single off the LP.

Episode 207 - Kenny Withrow (New Bohemians)

Episode 207 - Kenny Withrow (New Bohemians)

Kenny Withrow is the guitarist for Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians, and is one of my favorite guitarists in general. We talk about the new EBNB album "Hunter and the Dog Star," from the way in which it's structured to how it differs from previous records.

Kenny also talks about the Grateful Dead, its influence on his musical career, and what it was like playing with Jerry Garcia. We also chat about playing Dead tunes in Dallas, and why his favorite group to collaborate with is his own band (EBNB).

I loved hearing Kenny's take on jamming, practicing, and creating—and how he and Edie start the songwriting process. As Edie puts it, "there's stories all around if you pay attention. It's limitless...and they want to be told."

Watch an exclusive performance from Kenny Withrow on our YouTube channel.

    Episode 206 - DJ EZ Eddie D

    Episode 206 - DJ EZ Eddie D

DJ EZ Eddie D has the longest running hip-hop radio show in the world. He's also a DJ, with a vinyl collection comprising roughly 8,000 records that ranges from Curtis Mayfield and Billie Holiday to Skinny Puppy and Jefferson Starship. We get into some tricks of the trade in terms of DJing, from blending vs. scratching to sampling. Eddie talks about becoming friends with Erykah Badu in the '80s, the state of rap and hip-hop today, and how he got his stage name (his real name is Eddie Murphy). Eddie is an OG of the Texas music scene and he's got some great stories.

His weekly show "Knowledge Dropped, Lessons Taught" airs Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. CST on KNON 89.3. Listen to previous episodes on the KNON app. If you're in Dallas, you can catch him spinning at Whitehall Exchange and Tacos y Vino (listen to the episode for specific dates/times).
