Ginger Hardage on the power of storytelling to shape culture.

    Today we’re talking about Culture.
Culture is the unseen competitive advantage that sets winning teams and organisations apart. But one of the most overlooked aspects of organisational culture is in our language and in the stories we tell.
Ginger Hardage is former senior vice president of culture and communication for southwest airlines and she believes that the stories we tell are crucial in building the culture we want.
Ginger retired after an illustrious 25 years, where she served as a member of the CEO’s executive leadership team. At Southwest, Ginger led a team of 150 people responsible for building and sustaining the organisation’s legendary culture and communications enterprise.
During her tenure, she played a crucial role in developing and maintaining Southwest's culture, leading to the company's numerous recognitions on FORTUNE’s “Most Admired Companies in the World” list appearing for 23 consecutive years and included on Glassdoor's Best Places to Work List in 2022 for the 13th consecutive year.
Throughout her career, Ginger received numerous accolades, including induction into the Public Relations Hall of Fame and being named as one of Texas’ Most Powerful and Influential Women. Mark Butler on a proactive approach to mental health and supporting your team

Mark Butler on a proactive approach to mental health and supporting your team

We’re having a conversation about Mental Health.
There was once the belief that there is our personal life and our work life and never the two shall meet. What we know is that the line between personal and work is more intertwined than ever before. And as a leader the solution is never to tell people to leave their issues at home or to harden up.
But as leaders, it can feel hard to know what to do when people on our team need some extra support.
Accredited clinical psychotherapist Mark Butler believes that prevention is better than reaction. Mark has 25 years corporate experience and 15 years’ clinical experience in the field with a focus on workplace burnout, stress, anxiety and related unhealthy coping behaviours.
From his work as a Clinical Director, developing programs for the most deeply affected populations, Mark completely understands burnout and executive exhaustion. He sees the need to shift from being the ‘ambulance at the bottom of the cliff’ to being the ‘fence at the top of the cliff’ – working with organisations to be proactive in preventing issues from becoming problems.
Mark’s knowledge and experience has underpinned his drive and passion for pursuing effective recovery and resilience programs to get employees back on track and performing at their optimum level. His practice is built around belonging and our primal, human need to feel safe.

Sameer Srivastava on culture, adaptability and inclusion

Sameer Srivastava on culture, adaptability and inclusion

We’re having a conversation about Inclusion.
When it comes to inclusion at work we can all agree that diversity, equity and inclusion matters. This is something few people would debate. But while there have been countless studies that show the importance of creating inclusive workplaces. The current evidence also shows us that much of the effort and investment we make in diversity programs on average doesn’t have as much impact as we would like to see and at times can even have a negative impact.
Sameer B. Srivastava is a Professor of Business Administration and Public Policy at UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business and is also affiliated with UC Berkeley Sociology. His research uses computational methods to: (1) unpack the complex interrelationships between group culture, individual cognition, and interpersonal networks; and (2) examine how they jointly relate to individual attainment and organizational performance. His work has been published in such journals as American Journal of Sociology, American Sociological Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Management Science, and Organization Science. It has been covered in such media outlets as The New York Times, Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, and Forbes. He currently serves as Organizations Department Editor at Management Science and was previously a Senior Editor at Organization Science. Sameer co-directs the Berkeley Culture Center and the Berkeley-Stanford Computational Culture Lab. In a prior career, Sameer was a partner at a global management consultancy (Monitor Group; now Monitor Deloitte) and he holds AB, AM, MBA, and PhD degrees from Harvard University.

Kelly Irving on books, reflection and the practice of writing

Kelly Irving on books, reflection and the practice of writing

Today we're talking all about writing
One of the best practices a leader can develop is the practice of writing. Not just personal and self-reflective writing, like a journal, but long-form writing that captures your thinking, ideas, expertise, experiences and stories.
Expert book coach Kelly Irving believes that writing a book is much more than the outcome of holding a book in your hands, but a process of capturing your ideas and stories and becoming someone in the process.
Kelly is creating a new breed of authors. Her approach to book coaching was born out of a starry-eyed innocence. She wasn't programmed by years working in a stuffy publishing agency, nobody handed her the 'rule book', and she missed the memo that business books had to be boring.
Her 'Write Book Method' is for the originals, creatives and renaissance spirits who are brave enough to share new solutions, offer new insights, and reframe ideas around the most pressing issues of our lives. It's a framework for business strategy and reader transformation to beautifully co-exist.
In her words, your community is waiting to be ignited by your body of work. You owe it to them to share it with authenticity, courage, and integrity.
