Bitcoin, Central Bank Digital Currencies, and the Future of Money

Bitcoin, Central Bank Digital Currencies, and the Future of Money

Bitcoin is making headlines as we are ushering into 2021. A lot has been discussed regarding the future of banks, finance, and currencies around the famous cryptocurrency. With that, came another serious proposal to the world of blockchain, the Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC). Much like bitcoin, CBDC's are cryptocurrencies issued by the central banks and powered by blockchain tech. For this episode, we invited Hazim, who is working in the World Bank and an MIT alumnus to discuss the future of cryptocurrencies and Decentralized Finance, the reaction of CBDC to the world, and the future of money as we speak.

    We focused our questions:

    1. what is the difference between currency and digital currency from the perspective of central banks?

    2. bitcoin erupted from the narrative that banks and government failed to address the financial crisis of 2008. Do you think CBDC is just a reaction from bitcoin to maintain banks status or another innovation?

    3. currencies are political, do you think talks such as digital yuan, the devaluation of USD, will this lead to a new cold war?

    4. bitcoin has created a new economic landscape called decentralized finance. Do you think in the future there will be a dual economy, centralized and decentralized economy?

    Episode 2 Blockchain: Parliamentary Attendance

    Episode 2 Blockchain: Parliamentary Attendance

Parliament is the bedrock of democracy, a place where ideas and concerns of the people being brought up by the representatives of the people, the MP's. That is why it is important for the MP's to come and be the voice of the people. The question now is how do we know our local representatives really do attend the parliamentary sessions and vote for our future? We did a little experiment and realized the hassle of getting the information. We believe there might be a better way to know the attendance and let it publicly viewed by everyone using blockchain technology.

We had a chance to talk with Mr. Tharma Pillai, the co-founder of Undi18.  Mr. Tharma helped propelled the objectives of the organization and succeeded in passing the minimum voting rights of Malaysians from 21 to 18 years old. From this discussion, we try answering a few questions:

    1. How do we get the information on our MP's attendance?

    2. What can blockchain help in this matter?

    3. What is the future of blockchain in politics?
