EP. 79 - Chris Gehringer Masters The Last Second In Time w/ Lil Nas X, Rosalie, and 21 Pilots

This week on the penultimate episode of season 6, we thought it might be appropriate to feature our conversation with a guy who knows a thing or two about finishing records. Today we have our interview with world-class grammy award winning mastering engineer Chris Gehringer.  Chris has worked with countless A-list artists and major label superstars throughout his career, but he joined us on the record process to shine some light on his creative philosophy by describing the specific work he’s done recently with Lil Nas X, Rosalie, and 21 Pilots. He talks about creating cohesion in an album, and how mindsets can often differ between producers and mastering engineers. Chris weighs in the loudness wars, the discussions he’s had with clients about the reference material they send him, and why he believes that the best engineers and artists are always the ones who are open to the opinions of other collaborators.  Chris has amassed a wealth of knowledge and insights about making timeless records sound good, and he shares a ton of them with us right now.

14:35 - The shift in the mastering business across his career
47:55 - Getting notes from an artist vs a band
