    Shuffling the roster

    Shuffling the roster

Welcome to From Complex to Queens, Home Run Applesauce’s podcast focusing on the Mets’ minor league system.
Thomas and Lukas are both back from London this week, so promote-extend-trade discusses which part of their vacation they’d trade away. Spoiler alert, difficult to trade anything, London is a lot of fun. After that, we discuss a couple new mock drafts, neither of which land the Mets with a name we like all that much.
Moving on to the performance of the system this week, it was actually the bats leading the way rather than the arms. Simon Juan continues to hit the cover off the ball and seems primed for a Brooklyn promotion, even if he - like so much of the system - continues to hit the ball on the ground too much. On that note, Brett Baty is performing very well at Triple-A and clearly isn’t going to learn anything there; given that, and the poor performance of Jeff McNeil, it seems like the Mets should try to be creative and give him some real run at second base. We’ll see if that’s something they can manage.

Flushing is Burning: Willie Mays, American Icon

Flushing is Burning: Willie Mays, American Icon

Grace is back with a recap of all things gay Grimace Mets. The team is under the power of a fast food mascot, and Grace loves it. She gets into what has helped the Mets look so good the last week of baseball games, and the current lay of the league that makes their playoff odds still very viable.
Next, Grace does a segment she hoped she wouldn't have to. Willie Mays, baseball legend and American icon, passed away this week at the age of 93. She discusses what made him a legend to New York, what made him so important league wide and what his life was symbolic of. She also sneaks in a quick documentary recommendation.
Finally, Grace does a double movie minute of some old school Pride classics. Two 1961 films that meant a lot in the time they came out and in the following years, one constrained by the Hays Code of Old Hollywood and one a little freer to discuss the topics at hand (though not too much freer). She also discusses the way these films illustrate why the people pushing for a new code are pushing for something designed to squash the stories. She ends with a quick plea to see a new release on the big screen before it's too late.

    Maximizing the Active Roster

    Maximizing the Active Roster

Welcome to Today Your Love, Tomorrow the World Series, the new/old favorite from Chris McShane and Brian Salvatore.
The Mets had another good week of baseball after splitting the London Series and taking two of three from the Marlins. Chris and Brian discuss ways to maximize the active roster to ensure that good pitchers are in the rotation, black holes are out of the lineup, and the seemingly attainable third Wild Card spot is within reach.
    Chris’s Music Pick:
Sugar Candy Mountain - Six Six Six
    Brian’s Music Pick:
R.E.M. - Automatic For the People

    Straight Up Stupid

    Straight Up Stupid

Grace is back with another week of baseball! She gets into the good week the Mets just had. She also dives into the injury updates for the Mets, from the returns, and near-returns to the still hurt players and the players hurt worse than we thought. SHe also discusses the Phillies’ major injury blow this week.
Next, two separate teams in two separate cities and sports made equally questionable decisions in the midst of Pride Month. First, the PWHL draft just happened, and Minnesota drafted a player whose online activity shows her to be a racist/homophobic/transphobic conspiracy theorist (and that might not even be the team’s biggest problem currently). Also, the Texas Rangers have already leaned into their barely-veiled homophobia by being the only team in the league without a Pride Night. But their header change two days into Pride Month feels antagonistic given what we know about them.
Finally, Grace gives another Pride themed double movie minute. Two separate satirical teen films, one older, one current. They work well together in style and substance, and make for a fun double (or, with the addition of a film from last year, triple) feature.
