Denise Chisholm's sector and factor perspectives – May 30, 2024

Denise Chisholm's sector and factor perspectives – May 30, 2024

With the healthcare and energy sectors on the decline, and the tech and utilities industries on the rise, we look at how the increasingly concentrated market is leading to many companies going private, and how this effects the defensive sector. Director of Quantitative Market Strategy, Denise Chisholm, explores why defensive sectors such as financials and industrials are standing out, reasons why consumer discretionary is struggling, and what this could mean for your investment portfolios. Denise also discusses why operating margins are declining, the importance of diversification, and how the recent performance of the tech industry makes it the new stable sector.

    Jurrien Timmer's global macro view – June 3, 2024

    Jurrien Timmer's global macro view – June 3, 2024

U.S. Equity markets opened mixed this week to kick off a new month of trading. This week, investors can expect several economic data reports, including a key jobs report on Friday. Today's guest says we are in a "7 by 7 cycle", and that bonds are the new centre of gravity. Here to explain these thoughts and much more is Fidelity's Director of Global Macro, Jurrien Timmer. He introduces us to the concept of a "7 by 7 cycle", suggesting that we're in the seventh inning of both the business cycle and the secular bull market. He explains that while the market has made new highs, it's still relatively early in the cycle, with historical patterns indicating potential for further gains. He highlights the shift from valuation-driven gains to earnings-driven gains, showcasing improving earnings and margins as positive indicators. He also notes the potential high risk posed by rising bond yields, which could lead to occasional tantrums in the stock market. The interview also touches on the concentration of gains in mega-cap stocks, the Fed's monetary policy stance, and the implications of fiscal dominance on bond markets. As per usual Jurrien will be sharing some charts, so please head to @TimmerFidelity on X to follow along.

Trend Spotting: earning season takeaways – Joe Overdevest

Trend Spotting: earning season takeaways – Joe Overdevest

Joining us on the show today to cover a wide range of topics including commodities, natural resources and main takeaways from the earnings season is Portfolio manager of Global Natural Resources Joe Overdevest. Joe gives an overview of what’s happening in the economy. He notes the US economy is doing better than Canada. There is a focus on technology where corporations are seeing where they can spend on new technologies including AI. Resources in general are doing well, but it’s mostly dividend and buybacks that interest shareholders in this industry. Joe also touches on oil, energy, and metals like copper. He comments on the short versus long-term investing strategies. He says the thought is copper and oil will perform in a short-term. The main driver is GDP. US GDP is a driver for energy. China’s GDP is the main driver for base metals. The long-term perspective is that governments want to go carbon neutral while energy companies might not feel comfortable transitioning to that. In Canada, we are waiting to be carbon neutral even if Canada is a leader in the energy sector.
