A listener recently reached out asking for an episode talking about general advice when it comes to planning a hunting trip. 263. Principles over Methods

    263. Principles over Methods

"Pick a method and stick with it!" Sure, thats sound advice. Especially for beginners. But for those of us that want to know why a particular method works or how to overcome and even prevent certain roadblocks or snags from appearing, simply focusing on the "HOW" may not be enough.
Nate Czarnota of Iron Oak Dog Co. joins me to talk about the principles of dog training and how paying attention to learning theory can help you recognize what is actually connecting and driving your dog. Nate is a graduate from the NEPOPO Gold School and has since enjoyed helping teach others how they can have a better trained dog while improving their relationship with the dog by focusing on the "WHY."

    262. Preserving the Family

There are things that you may have thought were the primary reasons or benefits of getting into the gun dog world but, come to find out, there are other aspects that start to present themselves that make you realize theres a lot more to it. Perhaps its not all about the birds. Perhaps its not even just about the dog. Perhaps its about certain relationships, traditions, and family values that start to stand above all else.

Parents Ben and Diane join me with two of their adult children Elizabeth and James to try and put into words exactly what this lifestyle has meant to them as a family. From the invaluable life lessons taught to the kids through hard work and stewarding the land, to what its like owning and operating a multi-generational farm!

Recall | Ep. 138 Johnny Houses w/ Mark Fulmer

Recall | Ep. 138 Johnny Houses w/ Mark Fulmer

There have been countless guests and topics covered in episodes throughout the years that are truly invaluable and worth revisiting. Going through some of the back catalog and re-listening to some of the older episodes, I was honestly surprised at some of the information and details I have forgotten myself over the years. I wanted to try and highlight some of these guests and topics so I am going through and scrubbing some of the episodes and "remastering" them. Im cutting out any of the fluff such as the intros or outros so you hear just the meat and potatoes of these conversations. This should allow you to revisit these older episodes without having to sit through anything that happens to no longer be timely or applicable to the topic.

This time we revisit Episode 138 originally released on May 22, 2022 with Mark Fulmer of Sarahsetter Kennels where we broke down his decades long experience training dogs with the help of quail Johnny Houses!

Whats the purpose of a Johnny House

How far do the birds range and still return?

Planting birds as opposed to releasing birds

    Training means controlling the outcome

    Johnny House dimensions and specs

    Quail vs Chukar

Flooring and wood shavings vs hemp

The importance of a roof overhang

    Routine maintenance requirements

    Supplementing and replacing birds

    Mark's training process

    The birth of place boards

Simulating a covey in the training field

Proper feed and feeders for your birds

Cutting down on 80-90% of predation using owl decoys

    261. Chapter Recruitment vs. Retention

    261. Chapter Recruitment vs. Retention

One of the NAVHDA institutions, The Carters, joins me at the Eukanuba booth on the floor of Pheasant Fest. Blaine, Pattie, and Jason of Merrymeeting Kennels have been instrumental in bringing people into the bird dog space through their extremely active Yankee Chapter. We have a fun a conversation that covers a lot of insight and tips into not only recruiting new people but retaining the people that you do have!
    WATCH HERE

    Getting new people involved

    Retaining people is more important

"How's that working out for you?" Don't be closed off to new ideas

First impressions matter! Meet at the gate!

    Train people with "remedial stations"

Workers go first and be careful not to kill Jimmy!

Establish the plan before going out

Effective running order and process, no standing around, and a 2 bird limit!

Read what the dog is telling you

The importance of praise and rewards for the dog

Chapter training days balancing training a skillset as opposed to training for a test

    You can't steal a dog's drive!
