A Reflection on a Mysterious Birthmark

A Reflection on a Mysterious Birthmark

In this episode, Jacqueline had an intimate talking with her maternal grandmother and great-aunt, who were born in 1950s in China. Before the interview, Jacqueline reveals why she become interested in the population of women born in 1950s and 1960s in China. Raised by her grandmother, she is surrounded by many wonderful and strong women, but she hardly find any representations of such women on the screen. In documentaries, women are often depicted as someone's wives, mother, daughters, or sisters. They were hardly portrayed as independent individuals. Thus, she wants to listen to these women and hear their unspoken stories.

Great-aunt shares the story of her mysterious birthmark but Jacqueline discovers a more concerning issue behind this story: sending away daughters to other families. She provides two perspectives to think about: policy-related and technology-related. The first point is about the reproduction policy. Contrary to what most people think about Chinese reproduction policy, the policy at that time actually advocated for more children. But either direction, either encouraging or limiting children, doesn't change the fact that such policy is a severe violation of women's reproduction rights. She also touches briefly on the generation of single-daughter in the one-child policy era. The second way is to look at the advancement of development . She mentions how the availability of B-scan changes the gender birth rate.

In the end, she explores the complicated attitude she holds. From the personal perspective, she can sympathize with the people and realize how difficult it was to make such decisions. She doesn't want to accuse anyone for making bad decisions because she realize that it's the only choice available at that time. But she takes a more critical standpoint when analyzing the structural problem.
