Margaret Hurley and Nadia Ali on the importance of teaching pronunciation and a quick chat about accents Language learning, teaching and research

    • Education

I was suer excited to interview Margaret Hurley and to discuss pronunciation and accent teaching with her. Margaret's teaching style has inspired me for 2 years which was when I observed her class last. She is systematic and fun. Could any other combo be a better description for a teacher?
Pronunciation is a topic that is challenging for the teacher, student and researcher and is a topic that requires an observant 'ear'. We touch on these topics today:

Self introductions
What is pronunciation? What are accents?
Should we teach pronunciation? why?
What are the benefits of improving pronunciation and how can it be done?
What are some challenges students face with learning it?
What are some activities to help with those challenges?
Is accent teaching nothing more than a money venture?
Should people just be more tolerable to different pronunciation?
Is different pronunciation 'wrong' or a 'mistake'?
Do you get frustrated and annoyed with extreme pronunciation differences?
Is English being taught as an option globally or is it being imposed?

Margaret shares an important resource for teachers which I will gladly share if you email me at:
