Beatitudes – How We Share Christ

Matthew 5.1-10

5 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to

him. 2  And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

3  “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4  “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5  “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6  “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

7  “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

8  “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

8  “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

OPENING QUESTION:

WHEN and WHY is it difficult for us to live out in our actions what we believe in our heart?

PURE: (Popular Interpretation)

katharós, of uncertain affinity; clean (literally or figuratively):—clean, clear, pure.

Clean and Pure

1. Physically

2. Levitical Sense (Ceremonial or External)

3. Ethical

PURE IN HEART:

World asks…How do we find happiness? FOLLOW YOUR HEART

Jeremiah 17.9 -- The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

Soren Kierkegaard - “Purity of heart is to will one thing.”

One scholar wrote, “the single-minded, who are free from the tyranny of a divided

self.”

In the ancient Greek, the phrase pure of heart has the idea of straightness, honesty,

and clarity.

1. Guileless:

2. Transparent:

3. Sincerity

Making Peace

9  “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons [a]  of God.

First Thought:

Ones who break up the fights between two parties.

Not conflict, but peace….

1 Peter 3.11 -- let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it.

Hebrews 12.14 -- Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.

Romans 12.18 - If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

Peacemakers:

This does not describe those who live in peace, but those who actually bring about

peace, overcoming evil with good. One way we accomplish this is through spreading the

gospel, because God has entrusted to us the ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18).

2 Corinthians 5.17-21

17  Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. [b]  The old has passed away;

behold, the new has come.  18  All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to

himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;

And this is Evangelism:

We make peace between man and the God whom they have rejected and offended.

Who are the peacemakers?

1. One who is bringing good into others’ lives

2. One who is bringing men to God

3. Does not mean an easy-going person. Someone to RUN OVER.

4. One who actively sets out to make PEACE.

5. The peacemaker is one who points men to God, that they might surrender to God

and have peace.

SUMMARY:

Be the ONE LIFE that makes PEACE on the Earth for God.
