Episode 18 - A Systematic Approach to Rehab: Embracing the Hierarchy

Episode 18 - A Systematic Approach to Rehab: Embracing the Hierarchy

In this episode of the IN THE MIND OF PODCAST, physical therapist Rob Shapiro, DPT, COMT, NKT and Donis Gil, ATC discuss the history and utility of using The Hierarchy of Rehabilitation and Athletic Development system to guide rehabilitation. They explain how the hierarchy gives clinicians a framework to systematically assess patients, identify deficits, and progress treatment. Rob and Donis trace the origins of the hierarchy approach starting with strength coach Al Vermeil's athletic pyramid which was then adapted to rehab by Rob Panariello, MS, PT, ATC. They discuss how it was further modified for rehabilitation by incorporating pain management and evaluation components. The hosts talk through the value of having a basic algorithm to lean on, especially for new clinicians. They emphasize that the hierarchy allows clinicians to utilize their preferred treatment techniques while following a consistent thought process. Rob and Donis reflect on the hierarchy's role in improving critical thinking and preventing missed steps in treatment.
