Welcome back to a new podcast episode of of Where’s the Gringo? In today’s episode 3, my friend Mateo from CICI Idiomas, a Casa International de Cultura e Idiomas (International House of Culture & Languages) based in Valle de Bravo, Mexico joins me.
Mateo, or “Matthew” as other gringos may know him, is a cool guy from Cincinnati that has spent over 19 years in Latin America, including over 8 in Mexico. Founding & managing CICI Idiomas, he & his teachers provide a unique space for foreigners, Mexicans, & indigenous people alike to come together & learn from each other, practicing various languages & enriching each others’ lives through cultural exchange.
As I only have about 2 years in Latin America & 6 months in Mexico specifically, I saw it as a great opportunity to learn from him about some of his experiences & perspectives while living in Mexico as a foreigner. Oh yea…it’s always nice to show that some gringos actually can speak Spanish too 😉
I asked him various questions regarding the stereotypes & differences between our 2 countries like, ¿Como pensabas tu de México, antes de venir acá? (What did you think of Mexico before coming here?) and ¿Que barreras te costaron trabajo para acostumbrarte a vivir en Mexico (What type of barriers did you encounter that were hard for you to accustom to living in Mexico?).
The conversation turns a little organic, as I ask Mateo some challenging questions about what Americans could learn from Mexican lifestyle & viceversa, and I even try to bait him into politics with some current events regarding Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto & recently fired journalist Carmen Aristegui!

– Hola a todos y bienvenido otra vez al podcast de Where’s the Gringo? Yo soy el gringo, Ford Quarterman, y hoy estoy con otro gringo, mi amigo Mateo. ¡Hola Mateo!
– Hola Ford, ¿como estás?
– Muy bien, ¿y tu?
– ¡Excellente!
– Tengo otro gringo conmigo hoy, así que, le voy a hacer unas preguntas sobre las diferencias entre México, donde estamos ahorita, y nuestro propio país, los Estados Unidos. O como le llama en México, “Gringolandia.” Y Mateo, de hecho, tiene una escuela, tiene un instituto de idiomas aquí en Valle de Bravo, y nos va a contar un poquito sobre eso en un ratito…bueno, vamos a empezar. Mateo, en primer lugar, ¿cuando te mudaste a México? O sea, ¿por cuanto tiempo has estado viviendo en México?
– Aquí en México, pues, aquí en Valle de Bravo ya llevo 8 años. Vine aquí por seis meses. Fue una invitación a Valle de Bravo a trabajar por seis meses y ya llevo 8 años.
– ¿8 años?
– Así es.
– Solo 5 meses llevo en México, entonces, que bueno que estés con nosotros hoy porque estoy seguro que nos puedes contar mucho sobre México. Y, ¿porque viniste originalmente a México?
– Yo estaba viviendo en El Salvador, estaba trabajando en proyectos de prevención de violencia juvenil. Estaba en El Salvador 11 años. Y luego por el trabajo, ví una fundación mexicana que sabía,
