What does LGBTQ stand for?

L – Lesbian: a female-identified person who is physically and emotionally attracted to other females.

G – Gay: a male-identified person who is physically and emotionally attracted to other males. Gay is also used as a broad term to describe people attracted to someone of the same gender.

B – Bisexual/Bi: a person who is physically and emotionally attracted to people of more than one gender and who identifies as bisexual (bi).

T – Transgender/Trans: transgender (trans) is a term used by people who identify with a gender that is different from the gender they were assigned at birth. People whose gender identity falls outside of the gender binary (the idea that there are only two genders — male and female) may also call themselves trans. Since trans is a word used to describe identity, a person has to identify with the term (believe it’s the best way to describe themselves) for it to be applicable. No one else can decide a person is or isn’t trans. Other terms to describe gender identity that may be preferred by some people include genderqueer, gender fluid and androgynous.
Trans is not a sexual orientation — it’s a gender identity. “T” (for transgender/trans) is grouped with the sexual orientations in LGBTQ for many reasons, including shared civil and human rights activism and similar experiences of discrimination.

Q – Queer: queer is a broad term that includes all sexual orientations and gender identities within the LGBTQ community, including those who don’t identify with any other identity in LGBTQ. The term queer can be both positive and negative. Historically, queer was used as an insult, but it has been reclaimed by the LGBTQ community to self-identify in a positive way.

Q – Questioning: some people may feel unsure about their sexual orientation and/or gender identity. They may describe themselves as questioning. They may be questioning until they identify with a particular identity or continue to be questioning throughout their lives.

The Mormon Church has scrapped the worst of its anti-LGBT policies, in an unexpected U-turn. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced on Thursday (April 4) that it would roll back a policy targeting LGBT+ people and their family members
The controversial anti-LGBT policy, which was rolled out in 2015, said that Mormons who enter same-sex marriages would be considered “apostates” and excommunicated from the church.
The policy had also banned baptisms for children of same-sex couples.

WTF of the day: YouGov survey of 8215 US adults were questioned on Feb 6, 2018. Results are weighted to be representative of the US population: Just 66% of millennials firmly believe that the earth is round.

CBC: The federal government has rejected a public effort to ban something that many Canadians may have assumed was already illegal.

"We're disappointed that we don't have legislation at this point," says Alberta activist Devon Hargreaves. "But we will continue to advocate for those who don't have a voice."

Hargreaves, who works with the LGBTQ community, is talking about the controversial practice known as conversion therapy. It's a widely discredited approach of trying to counsel someone who is gay into being straight, either through talk therapy, medication or a combination of the two.

ADVOCATE: A 61-year-old Nebraskan mother acted as a surrogate for her gay son and his husband and gave birth to their baby girl (her granddaughter) Uma on Monday, according to BuzzFeed News. When husbands Matthew Eledge, 32, and Elliot Dougherty, 29, were searching for a surrogate to carry their child, Eledge’s mother, Cecile Eledge, offered to do so. Meanwhile, Dougherty’s 25-year-old sister, Lea Yribe, offered to donate her eggs, which were fertilized with Matthew Eledge’s sperm.

PINK NEWS: American fast food chain Chick-fil-A reportedly donated over $1.8 million to organisations with an anti-LGBT+ record in 2017. The restaurant company, which has around 2,000 branches in the US, gave $1,653,416 to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in 2017, according to US news website ThinkProgress. The publication reports that Chick-fil-A also donated $6,000 to the Paul Anderson Youth Home and $150,000 to the Salvation Army in the same year. The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a conservative Christian sports ministry, requires staff to abide to a “sexual purity” policing, which forbids all “homosexual acts.”

So I just found out there is a kiddo in my kids school, (Darrin). He is transitioning. He is in grade 8, and last year was (Darlene). The kids are being pretty mean to him, so I’m wondering what I can do (he helps with (name of their child who has a disability) a lot), how I can support him. Would Let Them Eat Gayke be appropriate for a 8th grader if he has fb?
