Sex and marriage have been synonymous for centuries. Why? For social structure? For tax savings? We each have a different reason for getting hitched. My reason was so I could enjoy an intimate and sexual relationship with a person of the opposite sex while we ventured through the place we call world. For me it is a source of release in any stressful situation. It helps me cope. My partner was opposite. Wanted to be left alone and often by herself going through a stressful situation. You can imagine the insulting glare in moments we were both in a stressful situation and I wanted closeness and she wanted solitude. It means that one of us always got what they wanted. Not taking sex seriously could stress any relationship. But a marriage all the more since there is an agreement to be monogamous. Withholding intimacy in a marriage will kill it. But intimacy is more than vagina and penis. There are many other aspects of a marriage that need to be taken seriously. If a COUPLE is unwilling or unable to talk about serious topics then important issues get swept under the rug and we pretend they are not real. We should deal with them or they will be the end of the union we call marriage.
